Routes & Branches 12/21/13

I have been looking forward to listening to the debut album from the Hard Working Americans since I received their single "Down To The Well" last month, and due to popular demand they moved up their add date for radio stations and sent us a copy of the entire CD. I like the entire album with special appreciation for 'Blackland Farmer', Randy Newman's, 'Mr. President Have Pity On The Working Man' and Hayes Carll's, ' Stomp & Holler'. Snider has always enjoyed the jam band scene and now has his own band to jam with. I recommend checking out the following link to an interview with Snider by Blake Phillips. http://ourkindofmusic.com/tag/duane-trucks/

So along with the holiday tunes I had a set of John Prine music because we have a local Annual "John Prine Sing-A-Long" night at Sam Bond's Garage. Don't expect John Prine to be there, this is just a bunch of locals who like Prine and his songs and we all take turns singing lead with everyone in the place joining in. It is a fun evening and this year it will happen on Monday Dec 30th.

Routes & Branches 12/7/13

Well it seems to happen this time of year, when I'm starting to gather together all of my favorite CDs of the year, that I receive a new release that just catches my ear and immediately competes for a slot in my top ten. This time it's  Kristina Murray's debut CD "Unravelin'". Murray has been compared to Emmy Lou Harris, Tammy Wynette and Patsy Cline so I'm finding myself  liking every track which is unusual for a debut album. So we'll see where she lands in my 'Best Of the Year' list.

Routes & Branches 11/30/13

Today's show was mostly a tour of the south with a few exceptions that included side trips to the New York folk scene revisited with the sound track from the movie "Inside Llewyn Davis" and to Colorado, to hear The Railsplitters and their debut CD. It seems like Colorado is the place for starting a bluegrass band these days. I like The Railsplitters, their chops are clean and smooth with excellent vocals.

I'm looking forward to seeing The Brothers Comatose and Shawn Colvin who are performing in our area in the next week, followed by the Tedeschi Trucks  Band at the Elsinor Theatre in Salem on Sunday, December 8th.

Routes & Branches 11/23/13

The Band of Heathens were in town last night and put on a great show to a packed house. I must say that they have great sound, well mixed, loud enough to fill the room without breaking your eardrums. And after seeing them perform their new songs live, I have more appreciation for their new CD "Sunday Morning Record".

I'm also liking the new single from Hard Working Americans (Todd Snider's new band, I can't wait to here the rest of the album. Bruce Hornsby is continuing to mix it up with bluegrass musicians,  this time teaming up with The Infamous String Dusters. I have also been enjoying Patterson Hood among others on a tribute CD to Bob "Slim" Dunlap who is best known as the lead guitarist for The Replacements. And , finally a Happy Birthday To Zoe Muth tomorrow.

Routes & Branches 11/16/13

Aireene Espiritu from Oakland, California and The Hobos from the UK stopped by the KRVM studio this week and performed a couple of tunes before their show at the Axe & Fiddle. They are quite the interesting group who all met when Aireene was touring in Europe last year. Having a mutual appreciation for each other's music they joined forces touring now on both continents. It is so inspiring to hear young people from different parts of the world enjoying and creating new Americana music.

One of my other favorite road bands is going to be back in Eugene this coming Friday. Even after losing 2 of their original members last year, Band Of Heathens have a sound and groove that always satisfies my live music craving. Their new album 'Sunday Morning Record' has been compared with early Eagles, The Faces, The Band and even the Beatles. I started the with one of my favorite covers they do "Mississippi Halfstep" which I think they do as well as the Dead ever did. What ever they play it is always a good time.

I also had The Flannel Attractions from Jackson Hole, Wyoming into the studio to play a couple of tunes live before their show tonight at the Axe & Fiddle. I also want to thank Nancy Scott, one of our Acoustic Junction DJ's for sharing the Townes Van Zandt and the Kerrville Folk Festival CD's with me. I'm looking forward to sharing these more with my listeners on future shows.

Local musician Jake McNeillie (left) and Company (Aaron Forman) were my first guests to perform in our new main studio. Playing tunes from his first solo album "Songs Of The Sage" which was recorded and mixed by Thaddeus Moore at our local Spout City Studios. With influences like Leonard Cohen, Johnny Cash and Tom Waits, Jake considers his songwriting to be like painting with words upon tunes that he finds inspiration from his dreams.  The tune "Wild Horse" is a beautiful example of Jake's songwriting with some dreamy slide guitar performed by Peter Perdichizzi. Well I normally collect all my CDs with working man songs to play this weekend, but this time I have been overwhelmed with my own work that I haven't had any time to round them all up. But I did grab my Best of Merle Haggard CD and could start the show with Workin' Man Blues.

With it being the end of the month, I also brought along my favorite picks for this month's Freeform American Roots Chart. Number one fav-O-month was Bill Kirchen's 'Seeds & Stems' followed by  Ricky Scaggs & Bruce Hornsby with 'Cluck Ol' Hen', I See Hawks In LA 'Mystery Drug', Nicki Bluhm & The Gramblers self titled CD, North Mississippi Allstars  'World Boogie Is Coming'  and Tedeschi Trucks Band with 'Made Up Mind'.

Routes & Branches 8/24/13

My show follows 'The Magical Mystery Tour' which features music from the 60's to early 70's so I often like to play a track that fits my show but also could be played on the Tour which only partly explains why I have started my show this week and last with the Allman Brothers band. The other part of the explanation is that the Portland band 'Brothers and Sisters' will be performing the Allman Brothers' "Live from the Fillmore East album in it's entirety next Saturday at the WOW Hall. This is no garage cover band. It is made up of seasoned Portland musicians including Lewi Longmire and Anita Robinson on guitar, Matt Cadenell and Ryan Spellman for the rhythm section, along with Tim Higgins on bass, Steve Kevin playing keyboards and David Lipkin joining in on harmonica. Their goal is to reproduce the live feel of the album as closely as they can. I hope to have Lewi stop by my show next week to talk more about the band and the music.

So the summer flood of CDs hit me this last week and I had more new discs than I could play today. some of the highlights are Dan Hubbard, Austin Lucas, Delvin Jake, Kevin Abernathy and Willie Nelson with Dolly Parton. I'm still lovin' the new  Bill Kirchen and the  Scaggs & Hornsby CDs.

I first want to thank Mike Meyer for sitting in for me last week while I went to Portland to see Todd Snider, Shawn Mullins, Hayes Carll and Sarah Jarosz. It was a wonderful outdoor show at the Oregon Zoo with each artist performing their own set of songs. It was a perfect home town reunion of sorts for Snider. He was in top form and would have told stories all night if the Zoo hadn't had a 10 pm curfew.
This weekend was my friend Al's annual pig roast and in honor of that I started with a set of Barbecue songs. I also featured new music from I See Hawks In LA, Tedeschi Trucks Band and Sarah Lee Guthrie & Johnny Irion.

Another great musician has gone on to play in the great band in the beyond. JJ Cale, the understated guitarist of his time who influenced so many other musicians and yet never really attained commercial success.
I was fortunate enough to see JJ Cale the last time he toured through Eugene and I am so glad that I had the chance to see him perform. I always liked his rolling rhythm style of song writing. I could have filled more than 2 hours of his music, but I have to mix it up with some of the new music just to stay current. Here is what I played today.

What a fun summer afternoon this was to be on the radio. Thanks for all of the great phone calls and requests which I managed to fit in.
On a more serious note I apologize for not playing any JJ Cale today. I only learned of his passing this evening after I was off the air. I have been listening to Cale for what seems like my whole life, though I have only seen him once and that was a year or two ago here in Eugene. I am so glad that I saw that show. I certainly will play some of his music next week.

Los Lobos who are celebrating 40 years together was in town last night and put on a great show. I played a set of their music on the show this week to get us all ready for the show. Local musician Curtis Salgado open the show and also joined Los Lobos on stage. They did a great version of 'West L.A. Fade Away' together.

I love summer for all of the music festivals, but the number of them theses days makes it hard to see them all. I try to catch as much of the music I can. I'll see you at a show sometime!

Routes & Branches 7/6/13

A summer mix of new cd's that I haven't had a chance to play yet along with some old favorites. I had to play Dave Alvin's "Fourth Of July", a tradition of mine on the first Saturday of July. I saw Railroad Earth last night and once again forgot to bring a deck of cards for the audience participation during the song 'Elko' so I had to play it to make up for it.

I'm looking forward to next weekend's live broadcast from the Blue Moon Stage of The Oregon Country Fair. If you can't make it to the fair, be sure to listen every afternoon on KRVM 91.9 FM or online at: http://www.krvm.org/ I'm looking forward to seeing Poor Man's Whiskey who is closing out our broadcast on Sunday Evening. If you are attending the fair, be sure to say hi if you find your self at the Blue Moon Stage.

Routes & Branches 6/15/13

A busy couple of days for me here at KRVM. Friday afternoon I had the Howlin' Brothers stop by and play a few tunes on their way to Sam Bond's that night.
The Howlin' Brothers have a great roots sound drawing inspiration from artists like John Hartford, Doc Watson and Mississippi John Hurt. Originally from  Ithaca, New York, the Howlin' Brothers now call Nashville their home where they find plenty of inspiration from the regular old time jams that take place  around town. Playing both original and traditional tunes, the Howlin' Brothers have a high energy performance that is sure to get you dancin'.
By going to the Howlin' Brothers show I was introduced to Whitey Morgan and the 78's, an Outlaw country rock band from Flint Michigan inspired by the likes of Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson. Needless to say, I was up a lot latter than I usually am.

For today's show I played the rest of my interview with Ryan Bingham that I recorded last week. Bingham is another one of those younger artists that I am enjoying watching perform. This time around he had a killer band, great lead guitar and a fiddle player that reminded me of Papa John Creach with his blazing leads.

Finally, I am looking forward to seeing James McMurtry this next week  so I had to play a few more tunes to just get ready. I am also looking forward to seeing the opening band for this show, a band from Portland called Denver that I recently heard about from my friend Lewi Longmire who will be playing guitar for them on this tour with McMurtry.

Routes & Branches 6/8/13

Ryan Bingham was in town last night and put on a great show over at the WOW Hall.  I had the chance to talk with him over the phone as he travelled to Eugene. Since we were finishing up our summer fundraiser this weekend I only had time to play the comments he had about how public radio supports artists like him along with a set of his tunes. I will share the rest of the interview with my listeners next week when I have more time to talk. I will also play some of the crowd favorites from last night's show.

My thanks go out to all of my listeners especially those of you who contributed to KRVM during this fundraiser. As long as you keep paying the bills that keep the station on the air... I will continue to bring you the Americana each week on Routes & Branches. Thanks for your support.

James McMurtry is coming to Eugene this month so I decided to make him my feature artist for this week's show. It was also the first day of our Summer membership drive and it didn't hurt that I had a few pairs of tickets to offer as an extra incentive to make a pledge of support to our community radio station, KRVM. James McMurtry is a big supporter of public community radio like KRVM and has been to our studios several times to perform on our airwaves. Thank you James for all of your support over the years.
Thank you also to all of the people who called in and pledged there support to Routes and Branches. Anyone can become a member of KRVM by going to our website http://www.krvm.org/ and clicking on the pledge now button. Routes & Branches 5/25/13

I had Dennis Winslow, Dave Stricker, Stephanie Pranzetti and David Wall, otherwise known as the Portland band Shoebox Letters stop by the studio this week. They stopped by to preview a few of their new songs from the upcoming CD called "Crossing Words". Stephanie takes the lead vocal on "I Can Tell" an upbeat tune about young love. David wrote and takes the lead on "New Eyes Now" about changing one's outlook on a relationship. Dennis finished the set with a tune called "Boones Ferry Road" a country tinged rocker about facing the ghosts of one's past. I like all three tunes which showcase the diverse musical abilities of Shoebox Letters.

I had a conflict this week when both Corb Lund and The Black Lillies played a block away from each other on the same night. I hate it when that happens. Since my wife is a big Corb Lund fan, he won the decision, but I do like The Black Lillies' new CD "Runaway Freeway Blues" a lot.

Routes & Branches 5/18/13

It was good to be back in the studio after taking a week off to visit my family. Thanks to Nancy for sitting in for me.

The Americana Music association announce the nominations for this year's awards recently so I had a set starting the second hour of 4 of the 5 albums nominated for album of the year. I didn't have a copy of the Shovels and Rope CD "O' Be Joyful" which was also nominated.  Of the other 4 albums that I did play, I must say that it would be hard for me to choose one over the others as my favorite. I have played all of them several times on my show and I like several tracks on each CD. I also found it interesting that all of the album nominations except for John Fullbright were by duos that were also nominated for that category. It will be interesting to see who wins in September.

New tracks this week were from Jason Isbell, Eric McMann, Reed Turner, and the Doug Prescott Band. Also an interesting collaboration from John Mellencamp Steven King and T Bone Burnett on a musical called "Ghost Brothers Of Darkland County" which started out as a story which Mellencamp told to King and was premiered last spring in Atlanta. The sound track has several artists helping out with the music including Dave and Phil Alvin, Sheryl Crow, Taj Mahal, Ryan Bingham and Kris Kristofferson.

Routes & Branches 4/27/13

I started today's show with a tune by George Jones who passed away yesterday. I was not a big Jones fan growing up, but as I have programed this radio show I realized what an influence he was on so many of the artists I do play, so I had to get a greatest hits CD when I saw it in the sale bin at my local record shop. For those who are  not familiar with KRVM, we have another show on Saturday mornings called 'Country Clasics' hosted by my good friend Johnny Ethridge who had a great show this morning featuring Jones' music.

So, with Willie Nelson celebrating his 80th trip around the sun this week I decided to honor him as the feature artist of my show. Willie is one of the musicians I grew up listening to and I still admire today. I have enjoyed his shows every time he has stopped here in Eugene. He is so supportive of younger musicians and family. Listening to his most recent CD, I was most impressed by Willie's lead guitar work on Trigger which is as good as it ever gets. Keep on Rockin' Willie!!!

Routes & Branches 4/13/13

I started the show today with a couple of Little Feat tunes in honor of Lowell George's birthday. Little Feat was one of the bands I grew up with and even though they still rock today, I will always miss George. I'm sure that he is still playing 'Old Folks Boogie' somewhere.
Another old timer who is still with us and coming back to town is Arlo Guthrie. I was playing the Motorcycle Tale when a listener called and asked if he had done any newer and so I played 'Road To Nowhere' which was a previously unreleased track on the 2009 release 'Tales Of '69.'
A couple of versions of 'Oh Susana', one done by Taj Mahal back in 1970 followed by Neil Young's more recent version. Both show how to rock a folk song!!!

My second hour evolved into the bluegrass/jam band hour after starting with  a couple of new rockabilly tunes by the Woody Pines and Ruby Dee And The Snakehandlers. The bluegrass jam started with an old favorite Railroad Earth followed by Yonder Mountain Stringband who will play 2 nights here in Eugene next week. The new kids on the show were Whitewater Ramble which I must say fit in the BG/jam group. With Tim Carbone as producer of their new CD 'Roots & Groove' this band is one to look for when they come our way.
The hour ended with Poor Man's Whiskey stopping by our studios this afternoon to play us a couple of tunes before their show tonight at the WOW Hall. From the first time I saw PMW I enjoyed their high energy style of what they have termed NorCal NewTime. They are preforming their version of Dark Side Of The Moonshine as part of their show tonight with guest fiddle player Allie Karl playing the part of Dorothy.

Poor Man's Whiskey on their way to the WOW Hall!!!

Routes & Branches 4/6/13

I had 3 focus sets on my show today starting with a couple of my favorite musicians who had birthdays today, Merle Haggard and Eilen Jewel.
I have been listening to Merle Haggard ever since I can remember. It seemed appropriate to start a birthday set of Haggard music with 'Mama Tried' and to finish it with 'I Am What I Am'. Haggard may be just who he is, which is just fine with me. I wish that I had more time to play some of the many artist who have covered Haggard over the years.
Jewel on the other hand has only been a part of my collection since I started hosting Routes & Branches. Even though she is years young than Haggard, Jewel has a way of taking you back to an earlier time when Honky Tonks were where everybody went to have a good time on Saturday night.

The third focus of the show brought back to the present with a live in-studio set from the Shook Twins who stopped by on their way to a show here in Eugene. Hot off a trip to SXSW the band is sounding great!! They have been working on a bunch of new songs which they are going into the studio to record later this month. We had the pleasure of hearing two of them 'Thoughts All In' and 'Crisper' which Laurie wrote.  Along with the recording date, the Shook Twins have a bunch of festival dates lined up for the summer including the Oregon Country Fair, The Northwest String Summit and The Cascadia Music Festival.  I wish them all the best.

Routes & Branches 3/23/13

This week I had the pleasure of playing a sampling of 'Skydog', the new 7 disc retrospective of Duane Allman's career. Allman certainly ranks up there as one of my favorite guitarists of all time. Like many folks, my knowledge of Allman's music mostly revolved around his work with the Allman Brothers band that he and his brother Greg formed. This new retrospective has helped me to realize the vast number of recordings that Allman was a part of over his career. We can all be thankful for recordings like this, keeping the music we love playing for generations to come.

Routes & Branches 3/2/13

I had a couple of local groups into the studio this week. Local Eugene band, The Whiskey Chasers brought by their new Cd "Well For The Worse" which talked about and listened to an original and an a couple of covers of traditional tunes. The Whiskey Chasers have been playing around Eugene for several years now attracting quite a following so it wonderful to have this Cd to support their music on the radio.
In my second hour the band The Cat Like Reflexes stopped in and played a few tunes from a forthcoming  Cd to be released later this spring. The Cat Like Reflexes are mainly a duo who occasionally add a 3rd member. They said that their live performances are a little more rock than what they performed in our studio acoustically. I look forward to hearing the Cd when they get it out.
