Routes & Branches 12/15/12

Well the cowboys and the hippies all showed up to fill Sam Bond's Garage last night to see the Turnpike Troubadours and Corb Lund & The Hurtin' Albertans. Needless to say the place was rockin' with "Our Kind of Music"!!! These guys had Eugene sounding like a Texas Roadhouse with everyone dancing and having a good time. The next time they come through we're going to have to find a bigger place to hold the party. I had so much fun that I had to start off the show with a set of tunes played last night.
Other highlights this week focused on a couple of up coming shows here in Eugene. The first of which is our local annual "John Prine Sing-A-Long" which is happening before Christmas this year. Everyone knows at least one or two John Prine songs and this a chance to sing them all. It's like a night of karaoke with a live band for back up and a room full of friends to sing along.
Second was the focus on Kinky Friedman who will be bring his "Bi-Polar Tour" to Eugene this week. Friedman I think will fit right into Eugene judging from the new tour recorded CD.

This week the nominations for this year's Grammy awards were posted on the Grammy web-site so I looked at all the categories for the bands and artists that I like to play and made them the feature of this week's show. I also played several albums on that were at the top of this month's FAR Chart with a few brand new albums that haven't even been out long to be included on either list.

Routes & Branches 12/1/12

I had a couple of musical groups into the studio this week. First I saw Jonathan Warren and The Billygoats this week at Cosmic on Thursday and noticed that they were going to still be in the area on Saturday and said to them "would you like to stop by and play some tunes on my show". They have a great roots based sound that they call Progressive Psychobilly Folk Grass. "It's foot stomping music that makes you want to drink a beer and eat a biscuit." It also went well with pizza.

In my second hour this week I had a lovely visit with Alice DiMicele. A long time Eugene favorite Alice's music can be best described as an eclectic blend of Americana folk. She was joined in the studio by her long time band mate Mikey Stevens who lent some tasteful trumpet and guitar leads to Alice's wonderful vocals and guitar.

It was a catch up day this week on the show, playing several new CD's that just had not made it on the show recently along with a couple of new favorites like Mark David Manders and his tune "April's Fool", which is a great new twist on the murder ballad, and Iris Dement's latest "If That Ain't Love". Shoebox Letters had planned to stop by for a couple of tunes but the "day job" kept them from making the trip down this week. I decided to honor their efforts by playing a set of their tunes anyway.

Routes & Branches 11/10/12

The final show of the Wayne Drury Project concluded last night with a packed house at the WOW Hall here in Eugene. Who knows where it will go from here, but all of us involved the project felt like it was a total success. To resurrect some old unknown songs from 40 years ago and give them a new life by passing them on to a new generation of musicians is truly what folk music is all about. My hope is that when I see some of these musicians playing next time that they include a Drury song in their set as a way of keeping these songs alive. You can be sure that I will continue to play them on the radio.

Routes & Branches 11/3/12

Cascade Rye stopped by the KRVM studio this week to promote their new self titled CD. Although this is the first CD for Cascade Rye, the members have been around for several years having been performing as Jake Payne and Dixie Creek. With the addition of Kalyn Payne to the band and her help with the song writing, Cascade Rye's tunes reflect a life of being together as a couple compared to some of Jake's earlier tunes. Another example of how music is the story of the human condition and the lives we all lead.

If you are from the local KRVM listening area, I encourage you to get out and see some of the great live music coming here this month. Last night I saw the first of two performances of the "Wayne Drury Project". It was a very inspiring evening culminating with Drury himself singing a few of his songs with his old band "Jackdaw" for the first time in fourty years. The second and final show of the project will be at the WOW Hall this next Saturday. Since this is not a regular touring band, this is a once in a lifetime show that should not be missed.

Routes & Branches 10/27/12

A lot of new CD's in the mix today including my six picks for this month's FAR Chart (*).

I had some of the local members of the Wayne Drury Project into the studio to perform a couple of Druy's songs. Drury was a prolific songwriter here in the Eugene area during the late '60s and early '70s and was the front man for the band Jackdaw. Drury wrote so many songs that some were preformed only a couple of times before being lost, while others have carried on and been preserved. By the late '70s Drury's battle with MS made playing and singing too difficult for him to carry on. Last year after 40 years, former band mate and London resident, Rob Anderson collaborated with Wizz Jones to stage several shows in London featuring the lost songs of Wayne Drury. The shows were such a success that Anderson and Randy Crawford (also a member of Jackdaw) are both returning to Eugene to preform with the group of local musicians that have joined together with the goal of bringing Drury's music to the forefront once again.
As a friend of Anderson's, local musician Greg Volstead has been leading the effort to form the local group of musicians. Volstead says that the project for him is more than to just  bring back Drury's songs for those familiar with Drury back in the day, but introducing them to a new generation of musicians, a passing along of the music in the folk tradition. Local members of the group come from several local bands including The Whiskey Chasers, Tara Stonecipher and The Tall Grass, Stagger and Sway, and The Whopner County Country Allstars.
Look for dates of the two up-coming local performances of The Wayne Drury Project in the concert calendar.

Routes & Branches 10/13/12

We were finishing up our Fall Membership Drive at KRVM. Thank you to all who have pledged their support to KRVM and especially the support for Routes & Branches. If you want to contribute to KRVM, please go to our web site: http://www.krvm.org/
I received Pete Seeger and Lorre Wyatt's new CD this week and found several songs that I liked and a couple that I felt really fit a pledge drive show like the tunes which started and end my show this week. From my childhood days to today Pete Seeger inspires me to be a better person and steward of this planet that we live on each and every day.

Routes & Branches 9/29/12

I have been looking forward to listening to the new John Hiatt CD ever since I saw it on our station list. Somewhere along the way it went missing and it wasn't until I picked up a copy this week when it went on sale that I had a chance to listen to the whole disc. Since Hiatt is one of my favorite songwritters I like several of the tracks on this new album, some of which I played today. The other disc I picked up this week since I hadn't seen a copy of it at the station was Corb Lund's new CD "Cabin Fever". I heard the song " Bible On The Dash " last week while driving my wife's car and I had to have the CD. Lund is at the top of his career with this CD, excellent tunes from start to finish.

I also featured a couple of the "London" tracks from the up coming "Wayne Drury Project". The London Tracks were recorded last year by Rob Anderson (Drury's former band mate) along with several other musicians that Anderson has played with. Tracks from these London performances are going to be released on CD this fall. Anderson is travelling back to Eugene this fall and will be performing with a local group of musicians who are learning Drury's songs for a couple of performances in early November.

The Honeycutters from Ashville, NC stopped by the KRVM studio this week and played us a couple of tunes from their new CD "When Bitter Met Sweet". Songwriter and Vocalist Amanda Anne Platt has a wonderful sultry sounding voice that has that brings that old time country feel to her songs. Platt is backed up by a stellar group of musicians that bring her songs to life with intricate guitar and mandolin riffs. Although "When Bitter Met Sweet" is only their second CD, the Honeycutters have that seasoned feel of a band that has been playing together for decades. I look forward to hearing from them again down the road.

Routes & Branches 8/11/12

I was introduced to Wayne Drury this weekend (pictued here with Greg Vollstedt, myself and Kaitlin Anderson).
The shows were such a success that Anderson is now planning to return to Eugene this fall to preform with a new group of local musicians that have joined together with the goal of bringing Drury's music to the forefront once again. Hence the "Wayne Drury Project".
This week I played a set featuring some vintage tracks of Drury and his band Jackdaw. As we get closer to the November preformances of The Wayne Drury Project I will play some of the new versions of Drury's songs performed by the project members.

Routes & Branches 8/4/12

A summertime mix of music this week starting with the new CD from Little Feat, "Rooster Rag". A lot of good tracks on this one which critics say is the best "Little Feat" CD ever.  Then on to a set of tunes to celebrate the life of Jerry Garcia from an Americana veiwpoint. Later on I counted down the top six CD's on the Freeform American Roots Chart for July starting with my top pick Old Crow Medicine Show's "Carry Me Back". I finished out the show with songs from several of the bands who will be at The Northwest String Summit this next weekend at Horning's Hideout.

There is music in the air and it's the best time of the year to get out and enjoy it live.

Routes & Branches 6/30/12

The highlight of this week's show was the second hour set of my 6 choices for this month's Freeform American Roots Chart. Here are my picks for this month.
1) John Fullbright: From The Ground Up (Blue Dirt)
2) Grant Peeples: Prior Convictions (Gatorbone)
3) Marley's Ghost: Jubilee (Sage Arts)
4) The Brothers Comatose: Respect The Van (Self)
5) Sara Watkins: Sun Midnight Sun (nonesuch)
6) Langhorn Slim & The law: The Way We Move (Ramseur)
When I read the one sheet for John Fullbright and it quoted James McMurtry as saying that Fullbright was "one of the most interesting new songwriters he had heard recently", I took a close listen. For being only 25 Fullbright writes and sings like he has way more years on the road than that.
It seems that my first two choices have a common homestead, Oklahoma. Grant Peepls is another musician  who is writin great songs. Timely and real lyrics for every day life in America.

Routes & Branches 6/23/12

This week I tried to play as much music and talk as little as I could. In addition to hosting my regular show I stayed overtime to cover our Acoustic Junction show which regularly follows mine. So you get 4 hours worth of play list this week featuring mostly performers who will be coming to Oregon this summer. I focused on three summer festivals starting with the Oregon Country Fair (July 13-15) followed by Pickathon (Aug 3-5) and NW String Summit (Aug 9-12). I also did a set featuring Steve Martin and The Steep Canyon Rangers along with Emmylou Harris who will be at The Cuthbert here in Eugene.

Either Acoustic or Electric I hope everyone catches some live music this Summer.

Routes & Branches 6/16/12
Our second Saturday of our Summer fundraiser here at KRVM. My thanks go out to all who donated this afternoon. The positive feedback of Routes & Branches was very encouraging. I will continue to bring "Our kind of Music" to the air each and every Satuday afternoon.
I'm looking forward to seeing Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks and their band tomorrow evening in Portland.  Although they cover a wide variety of music some of which doesn't fit in an Americana show, I can't get enough of Trucks guitar work and Susan has such a voice that ca't be beat. Together they make excellent harmony.

Routes & Branches 6/9/12

Today was the start of KRVM's Summer Pledge drive and I want to thank all of the listeners who called in to pledge their support of KRVM and especially my show Routes & Branches. I also want to thank anyone who pledged on our website. When I was talking with Ray Wylie Hubbard last week about Americana music and how to define it, He said that it was you our listeners who define what Americana is by listening to and supporting the music with your support of this station and program. Radio worth listening to is worth supporting. Everyone can be a member supporter of KRVM by going to our web site: http://www.krvm.org/ clicking on the "Pledge Now" button.

As part of my fund drive show I pulled out a few more older and vintage tracks including John Hiat, Townes Van Zandt, John Prine, and James McMurtry. Of the new cuts this week I tried to put some connections together like playing Railroad Earth followed by Bovine Social Club since Tim Carbone of RR Earth was the producer for BSC, and I followed James McMurtry with John Fullbright because McMurtry said that Fullbright is one of the most interesting songwriters he has heard recently. I also like Neil Young and Crazy Horse's new CD "Americana". I like how they have put new life into some great old tunes.

Routes & Branches 6/2/12

It was a pleasure to have Ray Wylie Hubbard on my show this past weekend and a joy to see him perform with his son Lucas Saturday evening at the WOW Hall in Eugene. Hubbard says that it is the folks that listen to Americana music are the ones who define it. Whether it is folk, rock, country, bluegrass, singer/songwriter, or guitar player oriented, Americana is defined by the integrity and quality of the music and the musicians who perform it. We also talked about Hubbard's new CD called "Grifter's Hymnal" which seems to be a more personal album than others with songs like "Coricidin Bottle" and "Mother Blues" which relate to Hubbard's own history. My new favorite quote is the last line of "Mother Blues" which says " The days that I keep my gratitudes higher than my expectations, I have really good days." Words to live by.
