Routes and Branches Play List 01/28/12

New highlights this week are Craig Finn, who took some time off from his band "The Hold Steady" to put together a solo album called "Clear Heart Full Eyes", and even though it is a 2010 release, a new name to me, "Joe Fletcher & The Wrong Reasons" CD "White Lighter". I like both albums but for different reasons. I like Finn's softer country/blues approach to his song writing and the fact that he has found a new friend in Jesus... Fletcher on the other hand sounds a little like Hayes Carll with his song "Drunk & Single" which is one of several songs that I like on this album.

Routes and Branches Play List 1/21/12

I just had a good visit with my wife's brother "J" who used to live here in Eugene and returned to Oregon this week to be part of the Renegade Saints 20th Reunion party happening tonight in Portland. J was the band's road manager back in the 90's when the band had a strong following throughout the northwest. A little more on the rock side of Americana, the Renegade Saints were good song writers who played with a lot of feeling.

A few new female artists in the the list this week starting with Katya Chorover and her CD "Big Big Love" which is much more Americana sounding than her name is. Jean Synodines, (another fun to pronounce name) has an interesting CD called "Girls, Good & Otherwise" which is for me one of those disc that has couple of tunes I think are good and the rest I think otherwise. And the third new CD was from Daphne Lee Martin & Raise The Rent called "Dig & Be Dug" which has a little south of the boarder sound on the tune "Rosalita". I'm also liking the Pegi Young & The Survivors debut release "Bracing For Impact". I think its great that she is putting out some of her own music after years taking care of family priorities that Neil couldn't.

Routes and Branches Play List 01/14/12

You don't need to give me much of a reason for me to play some Steve Earle, so the fact that he will be celebrating another trip around the sun this week is plenty of reason to make him this week's feature artist. The last couple of times I have seen Steve perform he seems to be doing well and even enjoying life and performing. Maybe starting another family has given him more to live for. Happy Birthday Steve.

Routes and Branches Play List 01/07/12

I call this show "The Best Of The Rest". There was so much good new music released last year that it couldn't all fit into a single 2-hour show. So this show is another bunch of my favorite releases of 2011 with a few Townes Van Zandt tunes thrown in to honor the anniversary of his passing. We still miss you Townes. At least we have your music.

Routes and Branches Play List 12/31/11

On the eve of a new year I played some of my favorite releases of 2011. This year since I am now a contributor to The Freeform American Roots Chart I put together my favorites show from the list I posted to the chart with a few additions like I extended my top Album list to 11(for 2011) from 6, and I added a NW Local category for artists from the northwest. Of course my list is longer than what I can fit into a two hour radio show, so first is the play list of this week's show followed by my entire list of favorites from 2011. You can find the Freeform American Roots Chart at: http://www.tcmnradio.com/far/
