Routes and Branches Play List 12/24/11

Well it being Christmas Eve it is time again for our annual Ameriacana Christmas show.

But first, I had to pay tribute to Warren Helman who passed away this past week. For the past two years my wife and I have attended and thoroughly enjoyed The Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival which Hellman completely financed each year. This past year we saw Hellman perform with his band The Wronglers. We had no idea that it would be the last time we would hear Hellman play the banjo. The festival will carry on but we will all miss Warren and all he did for the artists and the fans alike.

Routes and Branches Play List 12/17/11

This has been a year of a lot of emotional ups and downs. A year for a lot of great new music by so many fine musicians that I'm having trouble narrowing down my favorites to fit into one show. But it has also been a year of loss. For me it was the first time that a close friend and former business partner passed away. In our local music community, one of my favorite bands, The Whopner County Country Allstars, lost their bass player JP Scofield. I did not know JP outside of seeing him perform with the band, but listening to his songs this week I found JP's songs often evolved from his personal life and the difficulties he had getting through each day. I will remember him more for his great performances with the Allstars in which he always seemed to give 110% to putting on a good show and having a good time doing it. We will miss you JP.

This week being the solstice I asked local guitarist Brian Cutean to stop by and play us a couple of tunes and tell us some stories. Brian's guitar work is some of the best instrumental playing around. Even though I consider him more as a folk musician/story teller, his wordless guitar work rivals that of any classical guitarist and is perfect for reflecting on the season and the past year. Check out the concert calendar for Brian's performances this week.

Routes and Branches Play List 12/03/11

This week's show was mostly influenced by the announcement of the Grammy nominations this week. There were 4 main categories, Best Americana Album, Best Folk Album, Best Bluegrass Album and Best Blues Album, which I found albums in my collection. What surprised me was that I had all five nominees in the Blues category while all I had in the Americana and Folk groups was 3 of the 5. The only album to catch my attention in the Rock Album category was Wilco's new one "The Whole Love" and I was surprised to see the Decemberists nominated for Best Rock Song and Best Rock Performance for their song "Down By The Water". I never really thought they were rock, but everyone wants to be called rock because that sells better than Americana.

Routes and Branches Play List 11/26/11

I have recently started submitting my favorite albums of each month to "The Freeform American Roots Chart". This chart is made up of contributions from DJs from all over the world who play Americana music and have control over what they play on their shows. In other words, "Real Music Played for Real People by Real DJs". I feel it is an honor to be a member who contributes to this chart and I now plan on playing my six picks for the month on the last Saturday of each month. This month's picks start at the beginning of my 4 o'clock hour with my number six choice "Devil Makes Three" and concludes with my top pick of the month "Great American Taxi's" album "Paradise Lost".

Routes and Branches Play List 11/19/11

What a week for live music of our kind here in Eugene. There were so many bands here that I felt like I was at a music festival having to choose between bands performing at the same time on differrent stages. Of the four nights I made it out three of them I had to choose between two to three bands that I would all have liked to see. The bands that I did see were Dawes who opened for Blitzen Trapper, Lucinda Williams who's back up band Buick 6 warmed up the audience with an excellent set of instrumentals, a night of new grass from Hot Buttered Rum and Greensky Bluegrass, finishing up the week with a ride on the Great American Taxi.

Great American Taxi were nice enough to stop by the station and play a couple of tunes on my show before they headed off to Portland for another gig. The Taxi have recorded a new CD called "Paradise Lost" which was produced by Todd Snider and recorded earlier this year in Nashville. Snider helped the members of GAT to focuss on song writing for this album which is reflected in tracks like "Poor House" and " Blair Mountain" which they played in our studios this afternoon. The album may be more focussed on the song writing, but get them on stage and the Taxi does a great job of streatching out the jam in a tune. Sorta like a mix of The Byrds, New Riders of The Purple Sage and the Grateful Dead. I certainly can't wait for my next ride on the Great American Taxi.

Routes and Branches Play List 11/12/11

Today's show evolved around birthdays and of acts that are coming to Eugene in the next couple of weeks. There are so many good bands coming that on some nights we have to make hard choices as to who to go see. Tomorrow you have to choose between John McCutcheon who is in town for a benefit for Food For Lane County, Blitzen Trapper and a show with The Drew Emmitt Band and The Infamous Stringdusters. So I guess one just has to choose what flavor of Americana you want for the evening.

This week's birthday artists include Dave Alvin, Chris Smither, and Neil Young.

Routes and Branches Play List 11/05/11

Gram Parsons birthday landing on a Saturday was enough of a reason to make him this week's feature artist. Although he never gained what one would call commercial success with his music, Parsons is known for how he blended country music with rock to create the beginning of what we now call "Americana" music. Thank you Gram!!

To balance the vintage music of Gram Parsons on this week's show I had the band Stereotyped from southern Oregon into the studio to play a couple of their new songs. Stereotyped call their music "Blackgrass", a mixture of all that life has to offer from their lyrics about life's hard side to the uplifting feel of the music behind the stories. Along with using banjo, guitar, fiddle, bass and drums to create their music, Stereotyped also makes use of megaphones to sing and play harmonica through giving the vocals a sound hearkening back to what old AM radio sounded like.

Routes and Branches Play List 10/29/11

This week's transition song (from Magical Mystery Tour) was Danny Barnes new version of the T-Rex classic "Bang A Gong". A song that I lost a "name that band" contest to a friend when I was 18. I had heard the song on the radio all the time but I never knew who the band was. That was my first lesson in music knowledge humility. I am reminded every day that there is always more to learn about both old and new musicians and their craft. I love it when someone turns me onto something I haven't heard before which is why I play so many new releases on my show.

Being the end of October and what many consider Halloween weekend, I had a show mostly made up of songs about devils, Spooks, Haunted Houses and of course a couple about Zombies. But, along with all the spooky fun the season brings for many, this week has also been a solemn one for me with the death of a close friend and former business partner. As Hank Williams said "I'll Never Get Out Of This World Alive".

Routes and Branches Play List 10/22/11

The Far West Folk alliance conference has attracted the attention of our Acoustic Junction DJ's this weekend so I had lots of room to spread out and play some long tracks and some tracks that I would not play on Routes and Branches.I started by featuring artists who had won awards recently from the Americana Music Association, followed by several tracks of both national and local female artists. I then played some seasonal music from Southern Culture On The Skids and Kasey Anderson followed by a set about Hurricanes and high water in New Orleans.

The highlight of my first acoustic hour was playing one of my favorite classical jazz guitar albums "Friday Night In San Francisco" featuring the amazing guitar playing of Al DiMeola, John McLaughlin, and Paco DeLucia. Although I am not what you call a big jazz listener, I find the intricate guitar work on this album to be absolutely incredible and it was my pleasure to turn listeners who called on to this music.

During my second hour of "Acoustic Junction" I had the pleasure of having David Nigel Lloyd into to the studio to tell some tales and sing some songs. Lloyd is a Celtic folk balladeer in the true sense, a quote on his website says "He sings of pumpkin kings, fairy queens, East African juju men, idiot presidents, divine drunkards, eternal wanderers, prisoners both great and small, and ancient Irish warriors in dusty oil towns. “A strongly individual musical and poetic mind is at work here” (beGlad, UK)." Lloyd is known for playing a variety of guitars with various tunings as well as his "Octar" which is an 8- stringed guitar, but set with the strings in pairs like a mandolin. It had a great sound on the song "The Poor Little Englishman".

Routes and Branches Play List 09/24/11

The number of new releases that I have listened to this year has already outpaced last year and we are just beginning to see the fall swell before the holidays. With so many new releases each week it is hard to keep up with them in just two hours of programing, so this week I tried to play some of the new discs that hadn't made it into a show yet. They include Will Hoge, Pieta Brown, Jason Boland & The Stragglers, Ruth Hill, Lydia Loveless and Wilco, all of which have great new tunes that deserve airplay. I'm looking forward to seeing what else arrives in the mail box!!

Routes and Branches Play List 09/17/11

I had two new CDs that really stood out this week. First I was surprised to see Hugh Laurie's face on the cover of a CD in my mail box. I, like many others, would more readily associate Laurie as the main character on the TV show "House" not a musician releasing a new CD. As he writes in the liner notes of his new album "Let Them Talk" Laurie says "Let this record show that I am a white, middle-class Englishman, openly trespassing on the music and myth of the American south." He may be a white Englishman trespassing on the music of the American south, but he is not the first Englishman to do so and I'm sure he won't be the last and like the ones before Laurie comes through with the chops. A Piano player from the age of 6 Laurie was truly moved to have played piano for one of his idols, Dr. John. Laurie asked Joe Henry to produce this album and he collected an all star cast of musicians to play on it including Jay Bellerose-drums, Kevin Breit-guitars, Mandolin & Mandocello, Greg Leisz- guitar, Lap-steel, Weissenborn, & Mandola, David Piltch-Upright Bass, and Patrick Warren-Field Organ, Autoharp, Accordion and Keys. What an excellent album that I'm sure I will enjoy for years to come.

The second artist to catch my ear this week comes from closer to home,Portland, Oregon. I'm referring to Kasey Anderson and The Honkies new CD "Heart Of A Dog". I was a fan of Anderson's last album "Nowhere Nights" and I feel that this new disc picks up where that album left off with several strong new songs two of which I played on the show today.

Routes and Branches Play List 08/27/11

I had Shoebox Letters a band from Portland into the studio this afternoon to play some live music on the radio. The have a classic Americana/singer/songwriter groove and it was a pleasure to have them stop by and play us a few of their tunes. Dennis Winslow creates interesting songs which tell stories of life as he sees it. Their sound has a warm inviting feel with lovely harmonies.

This is also the weekend of our big downtown block party called the Eugene Celebration. I spent most of the first hour this afternoon featuring artists who have played or are going to play at the Celebration this year. I am looking forward to many of the acts that are scheduled to perform on Sunday including The Stagger & Sway, The Whopner County Country Allstars, Poor Man's Whiskey and Dave Alvin. It will be interesting to see who Dave Alvin has touring with him this time around. He's calling the band "The Guilty Ones" leaving the genders of the band out this time around.

Routes and Branches Play List 08/20/11

Most weeks my show is made up of what I have been listening to during the past week which is the case with today's show. I started with Poor Man's Whiskey because I'm looking forward to seeing them next week at the Eugene Celebration. Calexico and Amos Lee put on a great show here in Eugene this past week so I had to include them. Fast Rattler was also in town this past week and although they didn't care for the sound system mix and ended up playing without it, they performed great and it end up a wonderful evening of acoustic music.
Eilen Jewel and Misner & Smith will both be coming to town in this next week so I previewed a couple of their tunes as well. Misner & Smith will be performing live in the KRVM studio on Thursday afternoon. Be sure to tune in.

Routes and Branches Play List 08/13/11

What a year for new releases. It seems that every week I'm listening to another album that I want to add to my favorites for the year list and this week I had two albums to add.
Guy Clark's new album called "Songs And Stories" is an excellent recording of a perfomance at the Belcourt Theatre in Nashville, with Clark warmly surrounded by his musical family -- his longtime sidekick and co-writer Verlon Thompson, along with Shawn Camp, Bryn Davies and Kenny Malone. I saw Clark and Thompson perform together last year at The Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival in San Fransisco and this recording takes me right back to that day. Releasing just months prior to his 70th birthday, "Songs and Stories" is further evidence why Clark is a member of The Songwriters Hall of Fame, with craftsmanship that young writers study and seasoned writers admire.

The second album that I totally fell in love with this week is also a live recording, this time from the Horseshoe Lounge in Austin, Texas with Slaid Cleaves and friends performing two discs worth of Cleaves' songs. I have never seen Cleaves perform, but I'm sure that each show is a very special evening if it is anything like what this album presents.

There is nothing that compares with seeing your favorite musician perform their songs live, but these two performers have found a way to capture as much of that live performance feeling and save it for eternity.

Routes and Branches Play List 07/30/11

I had an itch to mix it up a bit more on the show today.
I wanted to play some vinyl so I brought in my older Lynyrd Skynyrd "One More From The Road", and some Charlie Daniels Band and a couple of new records, Ray LaMontagne & The Pariah Dogs "Live Fall 2010" and Steve Earle's single "I'll Never Get Out Of This World Alive", that I picked up back on "National Record Store Day" this past spring.
On the other side of the technology spectrum I had a couple of new albums, the Lewie Longmire Band's "Tales Of The Left Coast Roasters" and Sunday Valley's "To The Wind And On To Heaven", which I only had downloads from the artists themselves. A great mix of media to choose from which was a lot of fun.

Routes and Branches Play List 06/25/11

The summer music season is upon us so most of today's show featured some of the artists who will be playing in Oregon this next month along with a couple of new releases which I had to play.

The first new release featured this week was David Bromberg's new album called "Use Me" in which he not only asked other artists to write him a song to play but then to also produce the track. With artists from John Hiatt, Tim O'Brien and Keb' Mo' to Los Lobos, Vince Gill and Widespread Panic "Use Me" shows off Bromberg's versatility and adaptability to other people's music.

My second featured new release was Neil Young's latest "A Treasure" which is an archive release of his time playing with the International Harvesters in the 1980's. I think this was one of the best bands that Young ever played with. I was fortunate enough to see them perform live in Atlanta, GA. before I moved to Oregon. If you want to find out more information about this album go to neilyoung.com and he will tell you all about it in a video on his opening page.

My final featured release this week is Dave Alvin's latest "Eleven Eleven". Some of the tunes take me back to his "Ashgrove" album like "Harlan County Line" and "Black Rose Of Texas", while his duets with his brother and former band mates Chris Gaffney and Christy McWilson reflect more of the sound that they contributed to Dave's songs and the band.

All three albums are sure to make it onto this year's favorites list which is already getting a fair number of albums and we're only half way through the year. You gotta love good music.

Routes and Branches Play List 06/04/11

Saturday was the first day this year that felt like summer was on it's way so I started the show with the song "Summertime" done by Jerry Garcia, David Grissman and Tony Rice. It is a lovely version full of improvisation.

The Water Tower Bucket Boys stopped by the studio and played a couple of tunes from their latest album "Sole Kitchen". I really appreciate young musicians like the Water Tower Bucket Boys taking traditional styles of music and making it their own. "Sole Kitchen" is their first album of all original music created equally among the band members. After seeing their show at the WOW Hall last night I think The Water Tower Bucket Boys are ready to make a career out of being a band. Good Luck guys.

Routes and Branches Play List 05/28/11

I started this week's show with the new CD from Playing For Change called "PFC2". Although this new disc explores much more music than what I call Americana, I really appreciate what they are doing sharing music all over the globe including artists that I do play on my show like Grandpa Elliot who was also on the first PFC album.

My in-studio guest today was local musician and photographer Michael Kevin Daly. He has a new self produced album of original songs called "Boundless". Most listeners will recognize Daly's lyrical song writing from his work with the band "Sideroads" which has evolved into just a trio called "Dreamdog". Daly will be featuring songs from his new CD "Boundless" at upcoming Dreamdog shows this summer.

Since it is Memorial Day weekend I closed the show with James McMurtry's ode to the holiday.

Routes and Branches Play List 05/21/11

Well after last week's Hayes Carll dominated show I decided to go back to a more varied mix of music this week. I must say that Carll's show over at the WOW Hall this past week was still an excellent performance from the band even if we all were not throwing back whiskeys as we have at other Hayes Carll shows. The highlight of the evening was when Hayes sang "Downtown Girl" to a young woman who was attending the all ages show that night. So all in all it was a great evening of music.

Routes and Branches Play List 05/14/11

I first saw Hayes Carll 3 years ago in 2008 when he was touring behind his just released 3rd album "Trouble In Mind". Carll played Sam Bond's Garge that night with opener Cobb Lund and by the end of the evening Hayes had us all knockin' over Whiskeys. It was a night of great Texas honky tonk barroom music.

Since then I have seen Carll a few more times including being the opening solo act for Steve Earle when Earle was on tour behind his "Tones" album. This was a different side of Carll that I had not seen before, the singer song writer, which is where Carll started out in the bars of SE Texas. That performance Showed me how well rounded Carll was as a performer whether he has a band behind him or not.

So, now I'm looking forward to seeing Hayes Carll with his band he calls "The Poor Choices" when they perform at the WOW Hall this Tuesday evening. I'm happy to see Carll's success bring him to a larger venue in town, but I'm not sure that the WOW Hall will lend it's ambiance to the show like Sam Bond's does. The Poor Choices have been Carll's touring band for a couple of years now and it is the band that he took into the studio to record his most recent album "KMAG YO YO". I really like this new record and I had a hard time choosing which cuts to play since the whole disc is great. Definitely one of my top albums of the year.

Routes and Branches Play List 05/07/11

One of my all time favorite and most respected Americana artists Pete Seeger turn 92 this week. My earliest memory of seeing anyone perform live is of a Pete Seeger concert that my parents took me to when I was 6. Ever since I have enjoyed folk music along with many other types of music. I'm not the only American that Seeger has inspired with his music and at 92 he contiues to inspire me.
Thank you Pete!!

Routes and Branches Play List 04/30/11

A busy week here on Routes & Branches. I had two musical guests into the studio this week, first local musician Tyler Fortier who is releasing his second CD of this year titled "Fear Of The Unknown". Fortier says this album is totally unlike his last album which was recorded in his parents garage, "Fear Of The Unknown" was a major production bringing in multiple other musicians including but not limited to his regular band mates as well as getting some help from the University of Oregon's School of Music on horns and percussion. I have not had a chance to listen to the entire album yet, but what I have heard sounds really good.

My second guest today was Mark Growden who is on tour behind his 10th album called "Lose Me In The Sand" which he recorded with his Tucson String band. My first encounter with Growden's music was his previous album "St Judas", which he recorded with his Oakland band and has a more urban blues feel to it and is a totally different sound from the Tucson String band. I find that I like the sound on "Lose Me In The Sand" more than "St Judas" which I'm sure comes from my preference to the sound of the string band. Growden says that he is captivated with old American music, mainly African-American, recorded by ethnomusicologist Alan Lomax in the 1930s and 1940s.

Routes and Branches Play List 04/23/11

My guests on the show today was the folk duo Brown Bird who are in town and performing over at the WOW hall tonight. David Lamb started Brown Bird in 2003 and MorganEve Swain joined in 2008. They are now working their fifth album due out later this year and have just released an EP called "The Sounds Of Ghosts". From their performance in our studios today to the tunes I've heard so far I like what I hear from this multi-talented duo. One of the things I really like about Brown Bird is their unique harmonies which evolve from singing their lyrics in a round style.

Routes and Branches Play List 04/16/11

I had the pleasure of speaking with Marcia Ball this week. She is on tour behind her latest album "Roadside Attractions" with a performance to a packed house at Cosmic Pizza last night. "Roadside Attractions" has climbed rapidly up the Americana radio charts reaching #9 this week after only three weeks of being on the charts. Ball says that this album is a bunch of stories from her years on the road with some of the tunes written while riding in the car from here to there. Her New Orleans Piano Blues is infectious and will have everyone tapping their toes and dancing.

Routes and Branches Play List 04/09/11

I have been a little under the weather this week and didn't have much of a chance to plan a show, so I started off with playing the top 11 albums on the Americana Charts for this week. They're all really good albums with Lucinda Williams sitting at number one for the past several weeks. I'm also happy to see Hayes Carll up at number 2 on the charts. His album "KMAG YOYO" has to be his best work yet. I'm looking forward to seeing Carll next month when he rolls through Eugene again.

Routes and Branches Play List 04/02/11

I have been anticipating the new Steve Earle album for over a year now and I'm so glad that it is finally here. I saw Steve perform at least 4 times last year starting with his "Townes" tour at the beginning of 2010 which is when he told the audience that he was planning on going into the studio with T Bone Burnett to produce this new album "I'll Never Get Out Of This World Alive". I also saw Earle at the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festival last fall where he performed some of the tunes on this disc. I like every tune on this album and it will certainly make it into my favorites for 2011.
This is the second album of Steve's that Burnett has a hand in producing (The other was Earle's 2000 release "Transcendental Blues"). From the first track on the album to the last it is classic Steve Earle but I can also hear Burnett's influence on the tracks. T Bone has produced several artists that I play on my show from Robert Plant and Alison Krauss' "Raising Sand" album to Greg Allman's new album "Low Country Blues" and I'm beginning to hear similarities that are the result of Burnett's influence. In fact I like what T Bone contributes to other artist's work more than I have ever liked his own albums.

Routes and Branches Play List 03/26/11

This week I featured Buddy Miller's new album The Majestic Silver Strings. this is an excellent representation of what Americana music is today. As buddy says on the DVD that comes with the CD, "It just seemed natural, Mark, Me and Bill messing up old country songs. It just felt like a natural progression. You guys want to come over to the house and make a record". And that's what they did, set up in the living room and made a record. With some help from a number of guest artists including Emmylou Harris, Shawn Colvin, Patty Giffin, Lee Ann Womack, Ann McCrary and Marc Anthony Thompson helping out on the vocals, Buddy and crew put together a great album of covers from artists like Tex Owens, Lefty Frizzell, Roger Miller, Darrell Edwards and George Jones among others. Now that's Americana!!!

I had two other focus sets in the show, the first featuring the music of John Hiatt. We have a new show on KRVM called "In The Spotlight" (Monday's 9-10 pm.)which features a different artist each week and is hosted by different KRVM DJ's. I will be hosting the show on Monday, April 25th featuring John Hiatt and his many years of making music. Today's set was just a sampling of what I might play that evening.

The other focus set was a last minuet addition to the show featuring the music of Pinetop Perkins who passed away this week at the age of 97. One of the legendary Mississippi blues men Perkins had a major influence on today's American music. May he live on in his music.

Routes and Branches Play List 03/19/11

It was good to be back on the air this week. My thanks go out to Shotgun Majors for sitting in for me last week while I was taking care of business.

Back in February I had Tom Russell on my show and I asked him about Americana Radio and his Merle Haggard Tribute Album "Tulare Dust" 1994. At the time of it's release "Tulare Dust" was considered the definition of the Americana Radio format, alternative singer/songwriters doing classic country tunes. Although it is now out of print, a friend of mine had a copy of it and made it available to me to feature on today's show.
I have been listening to it all this past week and I like every cut on it, 15 artists each interpreting Haggard in their own way. Russell opens the album with a wonderful medley of the title track "Tulare Dust/They're Tearin' The Labor Camps Down" and Co-producer Dave Alvin closes it out with his version of "Kern River". In between you have artists like Iris Dement, Peter Case, Dwight Yoakam, Robert Earl Keen....among several more doing a great job with Haggard's songs.

Routes and Branches Play List 03/05/11

The Drive By Truckers are coming to Eugene this week so I decided to make them the featured artist for this week's show. I first saw DBT about 3 years ago in Portland and the show was great with a lot energy from both the band and the crowd. I'm so glad that they are performing in Eugene this time through Oregon. I have read some reviews that say DBT's latest album "Go-Go Boots" is not as good as their past material, but I have to disagree. I think it is some of their best work ever and as a whole I like "Go-Go Boots" better than some of their earlier albums in which I only liked one or two tunes. I also really like how Mike Cooley sounds on this album. His voice has a classic country feel to it on songs like "Pulaski" and "The Weakest Man".

Routes and Branches Play List 02/26/11

We received a new Johnny Cash CD into the station this week called "From Memphis To Hollywood Bootleg Vol. II" which has the first radio show (KWEM, Memphis) which Johnny performed on back in 1955 as well as a bunch of early demos which were recorded in the 50's and 60's. And then I went out last night to hear The Whopner county Country Allstars perform at their annual Johnny Cash tribute show at John Henry's. So listening to a bunch of Johnny Cash I thought that I would make him my featured artist for this week's show. Thanks for all the great phone calls saying you liked the Johnny Cash.

I also featured some new Lucinda Williams and some new Tyler Fortier from his new project "And They Rode Like Wildfire Snaking Through The Hills 'Neath The Scarlet Sun" which you can down load for free from Fortier's profile at bandcamp.com.
