Routes and Branches Play List 01/29/11

This week I had The Shinkle Band into the KRVM studio to play us some live music on the air. The Shinkle Band is made up of brothers Aaron(vocals, guitar, Harmonica) and Byron(Vocals & Percussion) Shinkle, Albert Fitisemanu(Vocals, Guitars, Bass) and Scott Eastburn(Mando, Banjo, Fiddle). Their self titled debut album is available on their website: http://www.shinklemusic.com
Although this is their debut album, The Shinkle Brothers have been making music for years and their music has been compared to the Eagles and The Band. I also think they have some pretty good harmonies like CSN too.

The other special part of today's show was being able to feature Greg Allman's new CD "Low Country Blues". I haven't seen a CD shoot to number one on the Americana Charts since Robert Plant released "Band Of Joy" last fall. Now we will have to see if Allman can stay at the top for as long as Plant who was there until Allman knocked him out. I suppose you got to be a heavy weight to beat a heavy weight. "Low Country Blues" is co-produced by Greg Allman and T-Bone Burnette who brought in a great cast of musicians including Mac(Dr.John)Rebennack. I think the great cast helped inspire Greg to be as good as he has ever been.

Routes and Branches Play List 01/22/11

I put together this week's show mostly around groups that have played recently in our area or will be coming in the near future.
Robert Plant and his "Band Of Joy" just announced a show at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall in Portland on April 19th. Plant's album "Band Of Joy" which came out last September is still sitting at #1 on the Americana Music Association's chart. Besides Plant the band has a stellar line-up which includes Patty Griffin, Byron House, Marco Giovino, Darrell Scott and Buddy Miller who also co-produces the album with Plant.
Other artists playing in our area soon include Amos Lee who is playing in Eugene tonight, The Asylum Street Spankers who are playing their last show this week at the WOW hall, Tom Russell who stops by Tsunami Books on Feb. 5th. and Drive By Truckers who will be making their 1st Eugene appearance in March. Speaking of the Drive By Truckers every time I play their new track "Used To Be A Cop", I get a lot of phone calls asking about it. It is one of two tracks from the new album Go-Go Boots that the Truckers released on a 10" vinyl 45. Go-Go Boots is due out on Feb. 15th.
2011 is shaping up to be a good year for live music. Get out and see your favorite artist or group.

Routes and Branches Play List 01/15/11

Well the new year is under way and we're beginning to see some good new arrivals to the station. Gurf Morlix has a good new CD called "Blaze Foley's 113th Wet Dream". I like several cuts on it including the two that I featured on today's show.
This week I also received a new CD from my buddy Scott Eastburn who is now playing with a band called "The Shinkle Band". They have a great sound which includes intricate instrumentation and excellent harmonies. We'll find out more about "The Shinkle Band" in a couple weeks (Jan 29) when I'll have them into the KRVM studio for some music and conversation.

Routes and Branches Play List 01/01/11

I had so many favorite new discs from this past year that I couldn't fit them all into one show which I played two weeks ago, so today I tried to fit as many of the rest into another short 2-hours. I started with Jason and The Scorchers recent album "Halcyon Times" which I would have fit into the earlier show had I received it before then. Not only is "Halcyon Times" the first album in years from JATS, but in my opp ion it is one of their best albums ever. The JATS tune that I played, "Beat On The Mountain" was also released on the album "Coal Country Music" which is a compilation of several artists in support of the effort to reduce the mountain top mining of coal in the Appalachian mountains, so I played Tom T. Hall singing "I'm A Coal Mining Man".
This lead me into the other compilation CDs which I liked this year, including "Crazy Heart", "Twistable Turnable Man" and "East Nashville Vol. 3 More Music from The Other Side". It is a shame that I only had time to feature a single track from each of these discs since there are many artists and songs worth playing on each.
