Routes and Branches Play List 12/13/08

Several weeks back we received the new Axton Kincaid disc "Silver Dollars" and I started playing it on my show. I liked their disc and went looking for more info on the web. As it turns out two of the members of the band live in Portland, OR. and other members live in San Fransisco. This week Kate Howser and Jennifer Daunt were traveling down to California and stopped by the KRVM studios for some live music and conversation. Hopefully we can get them back to Eugene as a full band in the near future.

Routes and Branches Play List 12/06/08

Most of this week's show evolved around the left overs of last week's show. There has been so much good new music this year that I could fill another two hours with mostly new music.
I also had a fun in studio conversation with Seth Kimmel and Christine Harris of the local old time band Molasses. They describe "Old Time Music" as fiddle based dance music that was passed down through the family gatherings. Families would share tunes at larger gatherings and that was how the tunes were passed around. If you didn't know the tune when the song started you would know it by the end.

Routes and Branches Play List 11/22/08

This week's show I started and ended with One Horse Shy, a band from Ashland Oregon that was playing at the Axe & Fiddle in Cottage Grove Saturday night.
The main feature of the first hour of my show was a live performance by Patrick Kaveney and the Last Drags. Patrick is a local singer song-writer who recently released his first album "Weather Or Not", which he says has a lot to do with relationships. Patrick Kaveney and the Last Drags will be performing at Cosmic Pizza on Friday, November 28th.
Next week for the holiday I will be featuring the best of the new music that I have been playing on Routes and Branches over the past year.

Routes and Branches Play List 11/15/08

This week's show featured an in studio appearance of three members of The Bridge, Cris Jacobs (Guitar), Kenny Liner (Mandolin), and Dave Markowitzt (Bass). Cris and Kenny are the founding members and primary song writers of The Bridge and have been playing together for about 7 years. Their New Album "Blind Man's Hill" they say is the best representation of their efforts of putting a band together. I must say that they sounded great in the studio as well as on stage.

I started and ended this week's show with Dave Alvin who had a birthday this past week. Happy birthday Dave.

Routes and Branches Play List 11/08/08

I started and ended this week's show with a new group called The Bridge.
The Bridge is a unique rock band from Baltimore whose music combines elements of blues and roots, spiced with funk and soul. They have recently become known coast-to-coast, and even in Europe, for their gritty and grand live performances and poignantly hand crafted albums. Following in the tradition of classic / southern roots rock, and flavoring their sound with Americana sensibilities, the band has built their own niche between the jam, country, and bluegrass genres.

The Bridge will be performing at the Fenario Gallery this coming Friday and Saturday nights. Tune into KRVM's Routes and Branches Saturday afternoon for a live in studio performance.

Other good shows to catch this week, both at the McDonald Theater, are Old Crow Medicine Show on Tuesday and Keller Williams on Thursday.

Routes and Branches Play List 10/18/08

I was happy to get back on the air this week after being out last week. My thanks go out to Shotgun Majors for sitting in for me last week. Since we started the Fall KRVM pledge drive this week I just wanted to play some of my favorite music and I barley scratched the surface of what I have been listening to this year. Rest assured that I will bring some more of my favorites to next week's show.
If you are a regular listener of Routes and Branches on KRVM I ask for you to pledge your support of the station at any amount that you can afford. Without our listeners support we could not bring you the live radio programing that KRVM brings to 24/7.

Routes and Branches Play List10/04/08

What a week this has been. Seeing Robert Plant and Alison Krauss was a great night of music. Starting the show as they open their album "Raising Sand' with the song "Rich Women" I knew we were in for a great show. With T. Bone Burnett and Buddy Miller backing them up on guitar, Robert and Alison played songs from Led Zepplin to O'bother Where Art Tho, as well as songs from "Raising Sand" I really like how their harmony vocals intertwine with each other.

Getting to this week's radio show, I had local Americana Artist Jake Payne and Dixie Creek into the KRVM studio for a live performance of some of their new songs. I like Jake a lot. He is a real music troubadour writing and performing his own songs in the traditional way. Jake has one disc out now called "What The Folk Is Roots Music" and he is currently working on a new album due out soon. His live performance at KRVM included two brand new songs from the upcoming album. I look forward to seeing Jake Payne and Dixie Creek perform in our area this month.

Scott Majors will be sitting in for me next week while I'm at the Fall Home improvement show at the fair grounds. Two weeks from now we will be bring in a sampler of all the best in new Americana music this year for our fall pledge drive. Till then keep your ears tuned to 91.9 KRVM.

Routes and Branches Play List 9/20/08

This week's show featured a conversation with Will Sheff of Okkervil River. Will and his band were in Eugene last night for a show at the McDonald Theater. Will brings a renewed approach to the creation of folk music. With his new album "The Stand Ins", Will passed out acoustic versions of the songs to other musicians for them to do covers of the tunes in their own way, as a means of promoting the new record. He says that this is more like how folk music was created and passed around from one musician to another. I asked Will if hearing someone else do one of his songs differently ever cause him to change how he preformed the song himself. He said that most of the time that he continues to his songs his own way, but that he recently was playing a song and found himself wanting to do it like one of his friends did it. "It keeps the music alive."

Routes and Branches Play List 9/13/08

This week's show started out with an in studio conversation and music with local artist Phoebe Blume. Phoebe brings a wide mix of musical experiences to her music from Opera training to touring the clubs in a band. She uses a variety of music sampling to create unique and original music. With lyrics that reflect her rural upbringing Phoebe's songs have the feel of modern folk songs. Phoebe is currently working on a new CD due out early next year. Until then you can find more about Phoebe Blume and her music at www.phoebeblume.com.

I picked up Drew Emmitt's new CD "Long Road" this week and found a lot of great tunes on it. From originals to cover tunes Drew has put together an excellent album. His covers of Super Tramp's "Take The Long Way Home", Marshall Tucker's "Take The Highway" and Van Morrison's "Gypsy in My Soul" are very well done respectable versions of the originals. He also has several excellent original tunes including "I'm Alive" and "River's Risin'
Other new music to Routes and Branches this week included the new disc from Little Feat "Join The Band" and Rodney Crowell's "Sex and Gasoline". Little Feat have joined up with a bunch of their friends and recorded new versions of all the old favorites. Rodney Crowell's new disc is loaded with great new original tunes from the title track "Sex & Gasoline" to "The Rise and Fall of Intelligent Design".

This week culminated my recent contact with David Bromberg with a great show Friday night at the Aladdin Theater in Portland. The show featured both the Angel Band with their outstanding female vocals and the David Bromberg quartet. At on point David and his band mates Bobby Tangrea and Jeff Wisor were all 3 trying to light a fire with their mandolins. A great show that I always remember. I hope that it is not 27 something years before I get to see him again.

Routes and Branches Play List 7/26/08

This was another special week for me at KRVM. This week I had the opportunity to have a phone conversation with David Bromberg. David and I share some similarities in that we both have been away from the music scene for a number of years, me from radio and David from touring and making records.

David Bromberg went to school in Chicago to study violin making. In 2002 he moved to Wilmington, Delaware where he appraises violins as well as buying and selling violins. Since moving to Delaware he also became involved in the local music scene, and is now baking up his wife's group the Angel Band.

The Angel Band is a powerful female vocal group lead by David's wife Nancy Josephson who either wrote or co-wrote most of the songs on the new disc With Roots & Wings. Nancy is joined on vocals by Jen Schonwald and Kathleen Weber. Together they create amazing Harmony vocals. The Angel band is backed up by "chum" which is a version of David's quartet.

David Bromberg has also released a new disc of a remastered concert that his quartet performed in New York City in 1982. It is a powerful show in which the band is cookin' I'm looking forward to seeing David again this week in Portland.

Routes and Branches took a preview trip out to The Oregon Country Fair this week. KRVM will be broadcasting "LIVE" from the Blue Moon Stage of the Oregon Country Fair next week end July 11th -13th. Check the www.krvm.org website for more details about our live broadcast from the fair. The Americana artists at the fair tend a little more to the acoustic folk music side, but there are some artists like David Jacobs-Strain, The Sugar Beets and the Renegade Saints that are stretching out into the blues and rock side of Americana.

At the end of my show I featured some other artists coming to the area including The Yonder Mountain String Band, Los Los Lonely Boys, and Los Lobos. I finished the show with Willie Nelson and a couple of vintage tracks from his new album Stardust.

So Far I'm not sure how many of my listeners check out this blog. But, if you have a comment about my show, this is the place to let me know what you think. I will be taking a break from the weekly blog next week. If you are at the fair next weekend, you can find me at the Blue Moon Stage on Saturday afternoon or at booth #2. Have a happy fair.

This week I had the opportunity to listen to the new Woody Guthrie Tribute Tour disc Ribbon Of Highway Endless Sky way. I found it a very moving performance that has as much meaning for our country today as the songs and stories did when Woody sang and told them in his day. Featuring this album on my show this week gave several of my sets a feel for the working men and women who make this country go from one day to the next, a major theme in Americana music. Anyone who likes the music of Woody Guthrie will appreciate this new representation of his work.

Routes and Branches Play list 3/15/08

Tim Little
3-5pm

This week I am visiting some of my Southern Routes with the music I played.
Some people may think that I was a little off the "Americana" path by playing such bands as the B52's and Widespread Panic on my show. But, both of these bands have roots in Athens, Georgia and that was the branch that I was taking. The songs that I chose fit the the southern theme of the show.

Athens is a hot spot for creating great southern rock bands. I started the second set off with the Drive By Truckers who also have roots in Athens. From there we begin to wader around the south to Mississsippi and Texas with bands like The Subdudes and the Mother Truckers.

In the second hour I give a "Little" Americana nod to St. Patricks Day with a set that includes Rodney Crowell's "Glasgow Girl" (I know, Glasgow is in Scottland not Ireland), Casey Neil's new album "Brooklin Bridge, and Billy Bragg's new single "I keep Faith".

Anyway, If you are reading this blog, you may have heard this show or others on Eugene's best community radio station KRVM 91.9 Fm. I feel very fortunate to be able to bring this music to my listeners. If you would like to help support KRVM, Please check out our web site at krvm.org.
