Routes & Branches 12/27/14

It has been another big year in Americana music with new releases from many known bands, some new groups as well as an emergence of several new super-groups including The Hard Working Americans, Trigger Hippy and The New Basement Tapes. In an effort to select my favorites of the year I am recapping my monthly choices for the Freeform American Roots chart. Since I try to not repeat an album from one month to the next, there are far too many cd's to fit into one show. This week I focused on the first half of the year along with my choices for the month of December (numbered) since I felt the need to feature them this month. Next week I will focus on the second half of the year.

I hope that everyone has a safe and happy holiday with the ones they love.

The Wailin’ Jennys are Nicky Mehta, Ruth Moody and Heather MasseThe Wailin' Jennys stopped by the KRVM studio on their way to a show tonight at the McDonald Theater here in Eugene. They performed a wonderful a cappella version of "Weary Blues From Waitin'" in which their harmonies were wonderful. They are also very talented on their instruments which include guitar, bass, accordion, banjo among others. By balancing family life with the road The Wailin' Jennys selectively perform for their loyal fan base.

Routes & Branches 11/15/14

Today I had Ashley Raines and Curtis McMurtry, who are sharing a bill at the Axe and Fiddle in Cottage Grove this evening, into the studio to perform a couple of tunes. They may be sharing the stage tonight but that is where the similarities end. Raines is a self taught prolific songwriter who rarely listens to other music, while McMurtry says he listens to jazz and classical music for tonal inspiration and studied music composition at Sarah Lawrence College in New York. Both men have that great singer/storyteller way with their music that will make the evening interesting.

The Hen House Prowlers stopped by the KRVM studios on their way to a show at our local hang that supports bluegrass music, Sam Bond's Garage.  I first saw the Prowlers on Mountain Song at Sea earlier this year. Mountain Song was a bluegrass cruise hosted by The Steep Canyon Rangers and the Hen House Prowlers were one of the bands invited to be a part of the festival at sea. I was totally impressed with the Prowlers sound. These guys are bound to be "Bluegrass Stars" a brand new tune which they performed today on my show this afternoon. Look for a new Prowler CD in the new year.

Routes & Branches 10/4/14

This week was the beginning of our Fall fundraiser here at KRVM and I decided to recap the albums I have chosen throughout this year for the Freeform American Roots Chart (FAR Charts). With a couple of exceptions all of the albums played came from these lists. You find the Far Chart at: http://www.tcmnradio.com/far/
At the last minuet I was asked to cover our Acoustic Junction show which follows Routes & Branches so I was able to play most of the albums I had submitted so far this year. Here is what I played.
KRVM is community sponsored radio. If you support this kind of radio programing, I urge you to donate now to KRVM during our Fall Pledge drive. You can pledge on-line at:

It is always a pleasure to have Mare Wakefield stop by the station and catch us up with her and Nomad's life and work. Formerly from Eugene Wakefield has now lived with Nomad in Nashville for Ten years and says it feels like her home now. She says that East Nashville feels a lot like Eugene.
Their new CD "Poet On The Moon" is an example of what living in Nashville has done for the couple. With help from a Kickstarter campaign they were able to hire Mitch Dane to produce this new album which allowed Nomad to focus on being a musician without the worries of producer too. He says that it really helps to get a few more ears listening to what your doing. With strong song writing "Poet On The Moon" is well worth taking a listen to.

This week I received a copy of the latest Levon Helm Band's "The Midnight Ramble Sessions, Vol. 3" which was my favorite of the many new CD's I listened to this week so I made it my feature album on today's show. The 13 tracks all recorded between 2005 and 2010 feature great tunes from the spectrum of Americana.

Other new music worth mentioning are: Kenny Butterill  who has nailed the JJ Cale sound on his new CD "Troubadour Tales", local Eugene band The Stagger & Sway and their new CD "Fun And Games" and Old Crow Medicine Show (who is at the top of the Americana chart this week) with their CD "Remedy".

This week Jeffrey Martin, a singer songwriter from Portland and who was a Kerrville Folk Festival finalist this year, stopped by the KRVM studios and shared some of his new songs with my listeners. I was unfamiliar with Jeffrey and his music and found myself really enjoying the songs he played. I'm sure that I will be playing more of his music on future shows. I had the chance to catch Dave & Phil Alvin at the Aladdin Theatre last night and they put on a great show. I never did see them play together as The Blasters, in fact I never had heard of either of them until I was working on my brother's house in Sacramento several years ago and heard a live broadcast of a concert by Dave and his Guilty Men. I immediately had to get my hands on some of Alvin's music. Ever since I have been a big fan and I'm glad to see the brothers performing together again even though I never saw them together back in their early years.
Although last night's show revolved around their new album of Big Bill Broonzy music, they mixed in several of Dave's tunes along with a few old Blasters Hits. An enjoyable evening was had by all.

Today is RECORD STORE DAY!!!
I have been a supporter of Record Store Day for several years now and it just keeps getting better every year. So in honor of  Record Store Day  everything I played today was on vinyl except for 2 tracks which I only had on *CD.
This type of show brings out more of my roots since I have been collecting records since they were the only way to collect music, but it also gives me a chance to play some of the music that I don't normally play because I only bring CD's to the show.

I did buy a few new releases today, the first I played is actually a rerelease of some old Creedence Crearwater Revival hits from 1969.This was a sentimental purchase because I listened to all these tunes at my local bowling alley in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa when I was 8 years old, and it has a great cover photo of the band playing on a street corner. The white vinyl is pretty cool too.
The second new release I played was from the Drive By Truckers,  called  "Dragon Pants". This EP appears to be extra tracks that did not make it onto their recent album "English Oceans". I played  "Grandpa Rock City" which I liked more than most of the tracks on "English Oceans". The final new track that I played was the entire side C (In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed) of the Allman Brothers  contribution to Record Store Day. It is the only side I have listened to so far and I looking forward to listening to the other 3 sides later this evening. If they are anything like side C, I am in for a treat. I will let you know next week.

Routes & Branches 4/5/14

It is not surprising that there are many unreleased recordings from Johnny Cash and if this new CD "Out Amoung The Stars" is any indication of what may come then we will have many more years of great new Cash. Johnny's daughter Rosanne is not doing too bad either with her CD  "The River & The Thread" sitting at #1 on the Americana charts for several weeks now. I was hoping that the Hard Working Americans would knock her off the top spot, but they dropped a notch to the Jackson Brown tribute album this last week so that idea seems to have disappeared.

I found it interesting that I had new CDs from Jessi Colter, Shooter Jennings and Waylon Jennings all show up in my mail box at the same time. After listening to Jesse and Shooter's albums I could understand the timing, but I don't think Waylon was in on the release date and that his disk was just a coincident. Either way they made a nice family set of new tunes for the show.

Routes & Branches 2/22/14

Anyone who knows me would say that I have a strong passion for live music, from local artists to national performers, which explains my absence for the past couple of weeks and how local guitarist Will Brown all ended up on today's show.
I saw Will perform over at Cosmic sometime last fall and totally enjoyed his finger style guitar playing. After completing his second CD of original tracks I suggested that he stop by and play some tunes for my listeners. You can find out more about Will and his music at: http://www.willbrownmusic.com/

The past couple of weeks filled me with so much music that I just had to share some of my favorite highlights today and I know that I did not get to all of them. Most notably absent from today's list are The Steep Canyon Rangers who were the host band on Mountain Song At Sea, but I will have plenty of more opportunity to feature them on future shows since they will be coming to Eugene in May. Cayamo has so much going on at one time that there are always some shows that I don't get to and two hours on the radio is not enough time to feature all the artists.
One of the best things about Mountain Song and Cayamo is hearing performers that I have never heard before. My first day on Cayamo I met some folks from New Mexico and I asked them who they suggest I check out and they said Max Gomez. I caught his first show on the boat and picked up his cd the next day. On Mountain Song my favorite new discovery was The Kruger Brothers. They made playing well look easy.
There are many memories that are special from this journey but I have to say that my highlight was sharing a beer with Dave Bromberg on the pool deck while watching John Fullbright preform.

pete
It was sad news this week when I heard about the passing of Pete Seeger. I was only 5 years old when my parents took me to my first Pete Seeger concert. I can remember the whole audience singing along with Pete which was his favorite part of performing. Pete was an inspiration to me because he made music that was accessible to everyone and often spoke of the struggles we all go through in this life. I learned several of his songs when I started playing guitar in high school. He is still an inspiration since he kept living his songs right up to the day he passed. God is counting on us now to continue Pete's work by keeping his music alive and well.

Today's show also had a guest appearance from Lindsay Lou Rilko who is better known as Lindsay Lou & The Flatbellys. She stopped by without the Flatbellys this afternoon and shared with me some of her family history and how she became a member of the Flatbellys. She sang a beautiful a cappella tune she wrote called "Smooth & Groovy" with so much feeling that she filled our studio with the sound of her voice.

My wife was the one who turned me on to Matt Andersen over a year ago when she was searching for versions of "Wagon Wheel" on youtube, but until last night we had never seen him perform. And what a performer he is, an incredible guitarist, getting more out of an acoustic guitar than most of artists I have seen. He also has an amazing vocal range and sings with such feeling. Since I finally have some of his music to play for my listeners, I decided to make him my feature artist for today's show.

I have been listening to Lucinda Williams 25th anniversary release of her self titled Rough Trade album and decided to make it my feature disc for today's show. Although this was her 3rd album, this was the first of Williams' albums to make radio air-play and for many of us, myself included, was the first time that we even heard of Williams. Listening back to the whole album again I was surprised as to how many of the tunes I not only recognized but had a strong appreciation for. If I was listening to this album as a new record today, over half of the tracks would be marked to be played on my show and it would be on my 'best of the year' list too.

Routes & Branches 1/11/14

I started today's show with the Allman Brothers since news this week said that Derek Trucks and Warren Haynes would be leaving the band at the end of the year. This may mean the end of the band since Greg is getting on in years and may not want to continue performing.
I saw a great show by Red Molly last night and had to play their version of Robert Johnson's "Come On Into My Kitchen". They also performed "Coal Tattoo which I first heard on Rich Kirby  and Michael Kline's 1977 June Appal recording "They Can't Put It Back" when I was in high school so I had to dig out the album and play the track today.
I also had the opportunity to see Del Barber perform last week and was very impressed with his songs. I picked up both of his CD's and played a track off each.
The rest of the mix was mostly between new releases and artists coming to our area in the near future.

 "The Best Of The Rest"

It is so hard to narrow down a whole year's worth of new music to fit into a 2 hour show. With that said, there are still many CD's from last year that I like and still could not get to on today's show. With a couple of exceptions all of the discs I played were released last year. The first exception was the Whitey Morgan track which was released in 2010 but was added to my collection in 2013 when I saw him perform at Sam Bond's where he will be again next week. My second exception is the "Hard Working Americans" which is not even in stores till later this month but was released to radio in December and was my number one choice for last month's FAR Chart.
