Routes and Branches Play List 12/26/09

An end of the year round up of my favorite CD's released in 2009. There was so much good music put out this year that it was hard for me to narrow my list down to fit into a 2-hour show. I may have to play another show of all the leftovers.

There is no count down or particular order to the list, but my all time favorite for this year has to be Buddy and Julie Miller's "Written In Chalk". It deserves to be the Americana Album of the year which it won back in September at the Americana Music Awards. It has the emotion and feeling of what Americana music is today.

Along with the national artists I wanted to include my favorite local releases of the year. These include the band Sideroads and their debut album called "Destinations", Patrick Kavaney and the Last Drags who recently released their second album "Darning socks For The Apocalypse" and The Whopner County Country Allstars with their second album "It's Too Loud". All three bands show a diverse talent for creating great music.

And one last note on today's play list, the Lewi Longmire album was actually released back in 2008. But, I was introduced to Lewi and his band just this year when one of the other DJs gave me his 2005 release "If I Live To Be 100" just before I left town for a road trip. Then in the summer I had the chance to see him at Sam Bond's and the Oregon Country Fair. Lewi has some great songs and puts his soul into every performance. Therefore, Lewi Longmire makes it onto my favorites of 2009 list.

I looking forward to seeing what 2010 brings.

Routes and Branches Play List 12/12/09

I started and closed today's show with Hank Williams III since today was his birthday. Both tracks were from his 2008 release "damn Right Rebel Proud".

I also had local band Patrick Kavaney and The Last Draggs into the studio to talk about their new CD "Darning Socks For The Apocalypse". It is more of a rocker than their last CD which was a little more singer/songwriter style. They will be having a CD release party on Friday December 18th. at Sam Bond's Garage.

I'm still working on narrowing down my top 20 CD's of 2009. I will be counting the list down on my last show of this year, Saturday December 26th.

Hot Club Of Cowtown stopped by this afternoon and warmed up the studio for me. I really could feel their passion for the music they play. After listening to them rip through a couple of tunes live in the studio, I'm very much looking forward to their show tonight.
There is a lot of great music coming to town this month. Check out our concert list to the right. I'm looking forward to Son Volt tomorrow and later in the week Chuck Prophet.

Tune in next week when we will be talking to local band Patrick Kavaney and the Last Drags about their new album "Darning Socks For The Apocalypse".

Routes and Branches Play List 11/14/09

I have been saving up some of the new music to the station for this week's show. With Our Fall pledge drive completed I can relax and talk about the new music more. I started with the New Riders Of The Purple sage because Ed finished his show with a vintage NRPS track.

This has been a great year for new Americana, Alt. Country, and Roots style music. It is going to be difficult to narrow down my favorites to fit into one 2-hour show.

Keep on, Keepin' on.

Routes and Branches Play List 10/24/09

The fall new music season is in full swing with a number of new CD's coming into the station lately. New music to R&B this week includes Trampled By Turtles, Willy Porter, Chuck Prophet, Jason Eady, Coby Brown, Danny Barnes and Chip Taylor. Each one of these artists are putting out great new music and making my favorites of the year list quite long. More on that later.

Next week we start our fall on-air pledge drive at KRVM. It is important that everyone who listens to KRVM contribute what they can to help keep us operating 24 hours a day everyday. The completion of our transmitter upgrades this year have made our signal stronger and clearer. KRVM sounds better than it ever has and it couldn't have been done without the help from our loyal listeners. Please contribute today!!

Routes and Branches Play List 10/17/09

I want to thank Shotgun Majors for filling in for me last week while I was doing business at our local Home Improvement Show.

I did have the chance to see some great music over the past 2 weeks. It started out with Chris Smither followed by Old Crow Medicine Show, a little Pert Near Sandstone and finished out with Lyle Lovett and John Hiatt for an intimate show at the Hult Center. John Hiatt is one of my alltime favorite Song writers with Lyle Lovett coming in at a close second. Their acoustic solo performance together was a very special evening, with each of them performing many favorites. I started today's show with the the songs they each opened the show with.
I'm also looking forward to seeing David Bromberg and his wife's group The Angel Band at the WOW hall this coming Tuesday. I went to Portland to see them last year when they started touring in support of the Angel Band's new album "With Roots And Wings". I'm so glad that they save me the drive this year and came to Eugene too.

See you next week on the radio,
Tim

Routes and Branches Play List 10/03/09

Chris Smither was in Eugene yesterday so I started and ended my show featuring some of his songs. He played every single song that I had picked at his concert last night at the Jaqua concert hall. A wonderful evening of music and story telling.

For the rest of my show I had printed out the program guide to the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festival which is taking place this weekend in San Fransisco's Golden Gate park, and played all of the artists that I would be tying to see if I was there. There were so many that I could only fit a single track from each into my 2-hour show. I'm sure I would have the same difficulty trying to see all the same acts over the course of the 3-days. Maybe I will make it next year.

Routes and Branches Play List 09/26/09

A number of new albums this week.

Drew Emmitt (Leftover Salmon & Drew Emmitt Band) teamed up with Bill Nershi (String Cheese Incident) to put together a new band which includes Andy Thorn on Banjo and Tyler Grant on Bass. Emmitt and Nershi had crossed paths several times over the years with their former bands and always wanted to play together but never found the time until this year. Their new CD " New Country Blues" is full great new songs.

Pert' Near Sandstone is high octane string band from Minneapolis and St. Paul. Their new album "Needle And Thread" is a mix of original and Traditional tunes trying to revitalize the American stringband tradition. Pert' Near Sandstone will be in Eugene at Sam Bond's Garage on Friday, Oct. 9th.

Chris Smither has a great way of telling stories with his songs and his new CD "Time Stands Still" is just as good as ever.

Other new discs this week include: "Before The Frost" by the Black Crows, "Walk" by Red Rooster, "Be Set Free" by Langhorn Slim and a self titled CD by Todd Adelman & The Love Handles. I really like the Todd Adelman album a lot. They have a great Honky Tonk sound.

Routes and Branches Play List 09/19/09

This week's big Americana news comes out of Nashville where the Americana Association had their annual Awards Show now in it's tenth year.
Buddy Miller picked up 4 awards including: Artist Of The Year; Duo/Group Of The Year and Album Of The Year for "Written In Chalk" with his wife Julie; and Song Of The Year for the Song "Chalk" written by Julie Miller and performed by Buddy Miller and Patty Griffin. Congratulations to Buddy and Julie for all of their success. You can be sure that "Written In Chalk" is in my top 5 favorites of the year.
The award for New & Emerging Artist Of The Year went to Justin Townes Earle, while Gurf Morlix picked up the Instrumentalist Of The Year Award. There were also several Lifetime Achievement awards of which I featured the artists in this show; Asleep At The Wheel for performance; John Fogerty for Songwriter; and Sam Bush for Instrumentalist.

It was rough for me to hear that Mary Travers of Peter Paul & Mary passed away. Since I was programing our Acoustic Junction show this week I took the opportunity to feature a set of Peter Paul and Mary's music. They were very influential to my learning how to play the guitar when I was in High school. I learned each of the songs I played in the set and "Puff" is still one of my kid's favorites.

Routes and Branches Play List 09/12/09

I saw Poor Man's Whiskey this past week on the opening night of their "Dark Side Of The Moonshine" tour. I was totally blown away by their musicianship. I last saw them about a year and a half ago and I thought they were a good bluegrass band then, but this week I saw a much more mature and seasoned band that I couldn't tell wheather they wanted to be a Bluegrass band or a Rock 'N' Roll band.
Poor Man's Whiskey's new CD is a double disk of which the first one is their version of Pink Floyd's "Dark Side Of The Moon". It has a Bluegrass backbone, but it gets as electric as the original when appropriate. For the most part they stick with the original lyrics, except for the tune "Money" which they change the lyrics to Moonshine. Pink Floyd Fans and Bluegrass fans can both enjoy this album.
The second disc is called "Moonshine" and contains 10 new songs which also show how the band has grown. I featured several songs from the disc on this week's show. My show follows a show that features 60's and 70's music so we set it up to play Pink Floyd's "Money" fron the original album to end that show into Poor Man's Whiskey's "Brain Damage" and "Eclipse" to start my show. It was a fun transition.

Routes and Branches Play List 9/05/09

I started today's show with Sonny Landreth who performed last night at our Eugene Celebration. His amazing slide guitar work is as great to watch as it is to listen to.
Other than that today's theme in honor of the Labor Day weekend was mostly focused on the working man songs that are common in Americana music. I'm sure that this theme will become a regular for me and I hope to add to my collection of songs each year. This year's list includes several new songs like Sam Baker's "Cotton", Nanci Griffiths' "Cotton's All We Got" and Levon Helm's "Growin' Trade".
I finished the show with a couple of acts that I will be hosting on Sunday's Live broadcast of the Broadway Stage of the Eugene Celebration, Hillstomp and Hot Buttered Rum. See You at The Celebration!!

Routes and Branches Play List 08/29/09

Ryan Bingham is coming to Eugene this week so he was my feature artist on my show. I had the opportunity to talk with Bingham on the phone this past week and I mixed our conversation in with his music sets.

For a young man Bingham has had his share of hard times and making something out of nothing. He said that he was given a guitar when he was seventeen and has never put it down. At the time he was traveling the rodeo circuit in Texas and New Mexico. He started to write songs about his experiences and to pick up bar gigs in the towns where his rodeo travels took him. Along the way Bingham was invited to play at an anniversary party thrown by musician Terry Allen and his wife, Jo Harvey Allen, where Bingham met a number of west Texas songwriters like Guy Clark, Robert Earl Keen, Butch Hancock among many others. This lead to Bingham's first CD on Lost Highway Records, "Mescalito". He said he had help on this CD from Marc Ford who taught Bingham how to capture his gravelly bar room sound.

Bingham's new album "Roadhouse Sun" also on Lost Highway records made it to #5 on the Americana charts a couple of weeks ago. It is full of good songs including "Dylan's Hard Rain", "Change Is" and "Country Roads". He says he may wear a cowboy hat but his music is a lot more than just country.

Routes and Branches Play List 08/22/09

Back on June 20th I wrote about a new CD by Mark Karan called "Walk Through The Fire". It has a great version of "Easy Wind" on it and that is what I had played on my show that week. At that time I didn't know that Mark has been playing with Rat Dog for the past 11 years. This week Shotgun Majors helped me put all of the pieces together when he mentioned Mark on his show Tupelo Honey (see:www.krvmtupelohoney.blogspot.com/). This had me listening to Mark's album all over again.
Then I asked Ed K. about getting some Rat Dog cuts to play and he told me about talking with Mark on the phone this week and that I could use some of their conversation on my show. I learned more about Mark from that conversation and my thanks go out to Ed for letting me share it with my listeners.
I also started each hour of this week's show with Jackie Greene. He opened the show for Rat Dog last night performing many tracks from his CD "Giving Up The Ghost" which came out last year.
We have a lot of great artists coming to our neck of the woods in the coming weeks.

Routes and Branches Play List 08/15/09

This week I had the pleasure of meeting and talking with Mare Wakefield. As many locals know Mare started her musical career here in Eugene but has since moved to Nashville. She said she finds the Nashville music scene as a lot more than just Country music with many talented artists to collaborate with. She says that with so much talent around it makes her work harder on her own material. I think it shows on her latest album "Ironwood".

Routes and Branches Play List 08/01/09

Jerry Garcia was my feature artist this week since his birthday landed on the day of my show. He would have turned 67. Although he best known for his career with the Grateful Dead, Jerry also played in folk and bluegrass bands such as the Sleepy Hollow Hog Stompers, Mother McCree's Uptown Jug Champions and Old & In The Way. His long time friendship with David Grisman also produced an abundance of Americana music.
Though he is no longer with us, Jerry's music lives on.

A Happy Birthday to Alison Krauss this week. In honor of her birthday I made her my feature artist this week. From her solo career, to her work with Union Station, Alison has produced great vocals, but I feel her best came out when she hooked up with Robert Plant. Their album "Raising Sand" was one of my favorites last year. No word yet on a follow-up album. I know there are many fans including me who would like to see them do another album.

After a week off to broadcast the Oregon The Oregon Country Fair, it was good to be back in the studio again. And now at 15,000 watts. That's right!! KRVM has just completed our power and HD upgrade on our transmitter. My thanks go out our Engineer and General Manager Randy Larson and his assistants for working so hard to bring KRVM into the digital age.
I started by playing a couple of my favorites from the fair and then I focused the show on catching up on the new music to the station over the past few weeks. Routes and Branches Play List 06/20/09

Happy Solstice.
A few new adds to the play list this week. Nancy Griffith has a new CD called The Loving Kind with several great songs on it. "Cotton's All We Got" is about her grandfather's garden. She has a great way of telling stories about real people in her songs.

Another new CD that I really liked this week is the one from Mark Karan. I really don't know much about him, but I really liked his new CD Walk Through The Fire. He does a version of Easy Wind that I think even Pigpen would enjoy.

Finally, I had to start and end the show with Lewi Longmire. Not a new CD, but I was recently introduced to Lewi's music and then yesterday I heard that he was playing in town tonight.

Routes and Branches Play List 06/13/09

No feature artist this week, just a whole bunch of great new Americana. I started with Steve Earle's new disc Townes since he made it to the top of the Americana Charts this week with it. I was also happy to see Todd Snider debut on the charts at #18. His new disc "The Excitement Plan" was the most added album on the charts last week.

Another new CD this week that caught my attention was Grant Peeples Pawnshop. His biography says that he has been around the music industry for years, but only in the last two years has he recorded any of his own songs. Pawnshop is Grant's second recording and first full length CD. He calls it Americana all the way through. Great songs done in a down to earth style with stories of real people.

Routes and Branches Play List 6/06/09

This week I had the band Sideroads into the studio to talk about their new album Destinations. Sideroads is a local group that has been together for about two years now. They first played together when Michael Kevin Daly and Richard Gabriel were looking for a bass player (Willie McEachern) and drummer (Joel Narva) to back up their guitar playing. They told me that by the end of that first rehearsal they all felt good about the group and looked forward to the next time to play together which continues to this day.
They have just released their first CD Destinations which features songs written by Michael, Richard and Willie. They each bring a different perspective to song writing, but then they back each other up which brings a balanced harmony to the whole CD. Even though he didn't write any of the songs, Joel also feels like he helps to make the band's sound blend together.

Routes and Branches Play List 05/30/09

This week feature artist was The Mother Truckers. They are one of my wife's favorite Americana bands and this week is the anniversary of their last album Lets All Go To Bed. A great disc which really highlights all of the group's talents from Teal Collins' soaring vocals to Josh Zee's amazing guitar work.
Thinking back to this time last year had me picking out some of the other bands that I was playing a year ago like Sonny Landreth, Eleven Hundred Springs and Railroad Earth. I also played a couple from The Felice Brothers since they will be in town this coming week.

Routes and Branches Play List 05/23/09

As I was gathering my music together for the show this week I first noticed that Steve Earle's new album "Townes" had debut at #11 on the Americana Charts this week. Then I noticed that I had 9 of the other 10 top CDs sitting in my to play pile. So with the exception of a new track from Bob Dylan, I counted down the top 11 CDs on this week's list with The Flatlanders and their new CD "Hills & Valleys" coming in at #1.
The rest of the show was also mostly new music with a vintage track from Wilco in the middle.

Routes and Branches Play List 05/16/09

This week's show was a mix of emotions with several cuts in memory of artists and tour mates that have passed on within the past year or so to great new music put together by seasoned musicians. My feature disks this week both came from Dave Alvin who last year lost a dear friend and band mate, Chris Gaffney. Dave has produced a tribute album to Chris entitled "Man Of Somebody's Dreams" with artists from Joe Ely, Boz Scaggs, James McMurtry, Los Lobos and many others.
His other disc just out is called Dave Alvin and The Guilty Women. This CD came out of a group he put together for the 2008 Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival in San Fransico. The Guilty Women are; Christy McWilson, Cindy Cashdollar, Nina Gerber, Laurie Lewis, Amy Farris, Sarah Brown, and Lisa Pankratz. This is another great Dave Alvin CD. It is well balanced with some of Dave's old favorites done a new way to soulful cuts featuring the women.

I also want to send out my condolences to Willie Nelson for the loss of his stage manager Poodie Locke last week. Thank you Poodie for helping Willie play all of those great shows.

Routes and Branches Play List 05/02/09

A couple of birthdays this week set the tone for my show. Willie Nelson turned 76 this past Thursday and Pete Seeger turns 90 this Sunday.

Since I had a larger collection of Willie's music I decided to make him my feature artist this week. Willie Nelson has been putting out several albums a year for the past couple of years. He has released 2 CDs already this year, one with Asleep At the Wheel and a second disc called "Naked Willie" in which he has taken several songs he released in the 60's and early 70's that he has now remastered taking out the horns and other souped-up "Nashville sound". I like many of the songs better this way, more like what you would expect a country singer/songwritter should sound like.

Pete Seeger has been an inspiration to many of the artists that we play on Routes and Branches. Pete celebrates his birthday today with a concert full of friends at Madison Square Garden. It is a benefit for Pete's Hudson River Sloop Clearwater, a nonprofit organization he founded more that four decades ago to help preserve the river, which has suffered from pollution. I certainly hope they release a CD and DVD of the concert.

Routes and Branches Play List 04/25/09

This week I had the pleasure of having Chuckanut Drive into the studio for a live performance. They are an Alt. Country band now mostly from the Seattle area except for founding member and song writer for the band, Steve Leslie who still lives on Bellingham which has a road in the area that the band takes their name from. They played a live version of "Kick In Your Door" from their recent album Fidelity Grange and a tune called "Doctor". I compared their song "Becky and Bobby" as a cross between Robert Earl Keen and Wilco. Steve said he liked that comparison and that he is also influence by artists like Dylan and John Prine among others.
Saturday evening was also very special for me with James McMurtry playing in town. He played a great show of many of his classic songs from his recent album "Just Us Kids" to his original album "Too Long In The Waste Land". His band mates the Heartless Bastards with Daren on drums and Ronnie on bass were along for the show, while Tim Holt the other guitarist for the band was on another tour doing sound for The Flatlanders. Without Tim in the mix James says he has to do more with his own guitar playing, which I must say, was very good last night.

Routes and Branches Play List 04/18/09

This week's feature artist was James McMurtry. McMurtry and his band the Heartless Bastards will be coming to Eugene next week as part of a short N.W. Tour that includes Seattle and Portland.
I had the opportunity to talk with James McMurtry on the phone this week. We talked about his album "Just Us Kids", his recent tour of Europe and a childhood story of Ken Kesey teaching him his first word, "Ball" which I mixed in with his music throughout the show.

Even though I could have filled my entire show with McMurtry's music, I also had to play some some Yonder Mountain String Band and Sam Bush after seeing them play together at the McDonald Theater Friday night. I have never seen Sam Bush play so much fiddle but in the mix it was right on. Also really hot were the duelling mandolin leads between Sam and Jeff Austin of Yonder Mountain. A great night of live music.
I also wanted to feature some of the other artists that are playing in Eugene this next week like Star Anna, Chuchanut Drive, Sideroads and Jake Payne & Dixie Creek. Check your local listings for show venues and times.
Tune in to Routes and Branches next week for an in-studio performance by Chuckanut Drive.

Routes and Branches Play List 04/11/09

In Honor of Merle Hagard turning 72 this past week, I made him the feature artist on this week's show. Merle Hagard was one of the first country style artists that I started listening to as a teenager. I always liked him for his songs like "Mama Tried" and "Workin' Man Blues", to his Honky Tonk songs and of course "Okie From Muskogee".
Speaking of old timers, JJ Cale put on a great show last weekend to a sold out crowd at the WOW Hall. With a show made up of mostly classics with a couple of tunes from his new CD "Roll On" mixed in, JJ showed us he still could rock.

New music keeps rollin' in these days. A couple of local mentions are; The Whopner County Country Allstars new CD "It's To Loud" and "Destinations" the new CD by the local Americana band Sideroads. Editors Note: I said that Sideroads would be at the Saturday Market next week (4/18), that is incorrect. The correct date is Saturday 4/25 at 2:00pm.

Routes and Branches Play List 04/04/09

With JJ Cale playing in town this Sunday at a sold out show at the WOW hall to benefit the Greenhill Humane Society, I decide to make him the feature artist of today’s show.
JJ Cale is one of my favorite song writers, he has been covered by the likes of Lynyrd Skynyrd, Widespread Panic, Yonder Mountain String Band, Chris Smither , and of course Eric Clapton along with many others. At 70 years old, Cale's new album "Roll On" is one of his best ever.

I also threw in a few brand new songs this week. Slaid Cleeves has a great new disc out and a new band from Cincinnati called One Horse sent me their debut album. I also had the new disc from local artists The Whopner County Country Allstars. I want to thank the Allstars for including me in their thank yous on the liner notes. I'm sure to bring more tracks from all of these artists to the air on upcoming shows.

Finally, I want to say a big Thank You to all of my listeners who have pledged to our Spring fundraiser. It is listeners like you who help to keep KRVM and Routes and Branches on the air.

Routes and Branches Play List 03/28/09

I was inspired this week by a new tribute album of Doug Sahm classics "Keep Your Soul" done by artists and friends who he influenced over the years. From his early years with the Sir Douglas Quintet to his later years with the Texas Tornados, Doug Sahm was inventing and reinventing what we now call Americana. I'm looking forward to listening to and playing more of this wonderful tribute album for my listeners.
The rest of the show was a mix of some of my favorites from my past year on the air with KRVM. This is the first weekend of our Spring pledge drive so if you listen and like the music I play, please show your support by making your financial contribution to KRVM right now at www.krvm.org and don't forget to mention that you like Routes and Branches. It is listeners like you that help keep KRVM on the air.

Routes and Branches Play List 02/28/09

This week's new music included two excellent albums. The first one is Buddy & Julie Miller's new disc "Written In Chalk", my feature disc for this week. Ever since I saw Buddy play with Robert Plant & Alison Krauss I have been interested in anything he is doing. Julie wrote most of the songs on Writtin In Chalk and they get help from Patty Griffin, Emmylou Harris and Robert Plant. Although Buddy and Julie have several solo albums each, I read that this is only their second joint album and what a good one it is.
Another side note on Buddy this week is that he also plays on the new Brigitte DeMeyer album "Red River Flower".
The second disc that I enjoyed a lot this week is the new one from Justin Townes Earle called "Midnight At The Movies". I only got to play one cut from it today , but it has several good tracks that I will bring to you on future shows.
One last note about this week is that John McCutcheon will be in town this Sunday to play a benefit for Food For Lane County. John is one of my favorite singer story tellers ever. He has a big heart and it is always in the right place.

Routes and Branches Play List 02/21/09

This week I had the opportunity to check out JJ Cale's new album "Roll On".I like the whole album so I made it my feature disk for this week's show.
Parts of this album sound like classic Cale and could have come out 30 years ago while other songs find him traveling in completely new directions. I read that his recording process for Roll On followed the same general path Cale has used throughout his career. He starts by reviving old songs from previous sessions, writes some new ones and lays down way more material than he can put out. Then he whittles it all down to the strongest set of songs. The new CD finds Cale playing guitars, pedal steel, bass, drums, synthesizers, singing lead, backup, harmonizing with himself and then producing and engineering the whole thing.

Routes and Branches Play List 02/14/09

This week with my show falling on Valentines Day I put together a bunch of songs of and from the Heart. Americana music is full of love songs. Today's list is just a sample of the variety that is out there.
In honor of their five Grammies this week,I started and ended the show with Robert Plant & Alison Krauss. Raising Sand was one of my favorite albums of last year. Now I only wish that they would do another one.
Happy Valentines Day
