Routes and Branches Play List 02/26/11

We received a new Johnny Cash CD into the station this week called "From Memphis To Hollywood Bootleg Vol. II" which has the first radio show (KWEM, Memphis) which Johnny performed on back in 1955 as well as a bunch of early demos which were recorded in the 50's and 60's. And then I went out last night to hear The Whopner county Country Allstars perform at their annual Johnny Cash tribute show at John Henry's. So listening to a bunch of Johnny Cash I thought that I would make him my featured artist for this week's show. Thanks for all the great phone calls saying you liked the Johnny Cash.

I also featured some new Lucinda Williams and some new Tyler Fortier from his new project "And They Rode Like Wildfire Snaking Through The Hills 'Neath The Scarlet Sun" which you can down load for free from Fortier's profile at bandcamp.com.

Routes and Branches Play List 02/19/11

I started today's show with a group of Grammy Award winners. It is good to see a variety of Americana Artists earning Grammy's for their good work. Ryan Bingham who was in Eugene this week won his second award for his song "The Weary Kind". Mavis Staples won the award for Best Americana album which is a fairly new catagory at the Grammys.
This week I did my first interview in a motor home that the Evangenitals were traveling in for their Northwest tour. The Evangenitals are an alt.country band from southern California founded by Juli Crocket and Lisa Dee when they were working together. They started at an open mic night and received such a great response that they decided to keep writting songs and performing. Their infectious and inspiring music will keep you tappin' your toes.

With Valentines day around the corner I put together a bunch of love songs for today's show. There is no shortage of songs about romance in Americana music but I only had two hours to fill, so this is what I played.

Routes and Branches Play List 02/05/11

I had the great pleasure and honor to have Americana Legend Tom Russell into the KRVM studio this week. Russell is credited along with Dave Alvin with creating the Americana Radio format when they released their tribute to Merle Haggard 'Tulare Dust' in 1994. I have not heard 'Tulare Dust' my self but Russell described it as an acoustic album with Lucinda Williams, Dwight Yokum and Steve Young along with himself and Dave Alvin performing Haggard songs and that it did really start the 'Americana Radio' format at the time. Russell says that we have always needed a box to put in song writers and their music which don't fit into mainstream radio format and 'Americana' was it at the time. Today he acknowledged that 'Americana' has been used very liberally to describe many artists. This is reflected in the variety of music that you can hear on the variety of 'Americana' shows on the radio.
