The end of the month and a holiday weekend made for time to reflect on this month's new releases and my choices for the Freeform American Roots chart(numbered below). It is getting to be time to go through the entire year and choose which ones make it to the final favorites of the year.

Routes & Branches 11/22/14

The Wailin’ Jennys are Nicky Mehta, Ruth Moody and Heather MasseThe Wailin' Jennys stopped by the KRVM studio on their way to a show tonight at the McDonald Theater here in Eugene. They performed a wonderful a cappella version of "Weary Blues From Waitin'" in which their harmonies were wonderful. They are also very talented on their instruments which include guitar, bass, accordion, banjo among others. By balancing family life with the road The Wailin' Jennys selectively perform for their loyal fan base.

Routes & Branches 11/15/14

Today I had Ashley Raines and Curtis McMurtry, who are sharing a bill at the Axe and Fiddle in Cottage Grove this evening, into the studio to perform a couple of tunes. They may be sharing the stage tonight but that is where the similarities end. Raines is a self taught prolific songwriter who rarely listens to other music, while McMurtry says he listens to jazz and classical music for tonal inspiration and studied music composition at Sarah Lawrence College in New York. Both men have that great singer/storyteller way with their music that will make the evening interesting.

Routes & Branches 11/8/14

The Hen House Prowlers stopped by the KRVM studios on their way to a show at our local hang that supports bluegrass music, Sam Bond's Garage.  I first saw the Prowlers on Mountain Song at Sea earlier this year. Mountain Song was a bluegrass cruise hosted by The Steep Canyon Rangers and the Hen House Prowlers were one of the bands invited to be a part of the festival at sea. I was totally impressed with the Prowlers sound. These guys are bound to be "Bluegrass Stars" a brand new tune which they performed today on my show this afternoon. Look for a new Prowler CD in the new year.
