Routes and Branches Play List 01/30/10

Well,I'm still focused on Steve Earle and Townes Van Zandt this week since my wife found and bought me a copy of Together At The Bluebird Café. It is a live recording of Steve, Townes and Guy Clark from 1995 when they performed at a benefit concert for the Interfaith Dental Clinic at The Bluebird Cafe in Nashville. They each take turns performing their own songs in what seems to be an informal setting. I featured two sets of each artist playing a song. The disc even has Townes telling a story about his own dental needs because of loosing a tooth in a dice game which I didn't have time to play. I closed out my show the way Steve ended his show the other night with his song Copperhead Road.

Routes and Branches Play List 01/23/10

This week's highlight was seeing Steve Earle for the first time. Steve is looking good on this tour behind his new album Townes. As to be expected the show was mostly a mix of stories and songs by and about Townes Van Zandt. Earle did mix in a few older tunes like The Galway Girl and City of Immigrants in which he also talked about living in New York City. I really appreciate the stories Steve told between songs. It's a rich oral history told just like it was done in the days before TV.
Steve also shared with the audience that he and his wife, Allison Moorer are expecting a baby boy this spring to be named John Henry Earle. Moorer is releasing her new album Crows on February 9th. I just received a copy of it today. Look for some of it on future shows.
Earle also let us know that he has plans to record a new CD this year with T. Bone Burnett. I'm looking forward to that one.

Hayes Carll opened the show for Steve Earle. Hayes performed well, but I think he felt like the opening act which he was. His set was a short mix of songs from his three albums. I was not familiar with Carll's 2nd album Little Rock so I picked up a copy from him. There are several good songs on the album including the title track which I started my show with today.

Routes and Branches Play List 01/16/10

I had the Oakland Indie band Powerdove stop by the studio this afternoon. Powerdove is Annie Lewandowski on vocals and guitar, Jason Hoopes on stand-up bass and Alex Vittum on percussion. They are a new group who met each other in school and are out now sharing their music with us in the Northwest. You can find their music at: http://www.myspace.com/powerdove

Otherwise the show was just another Saturday afternoon R&B mix. I am looking forward to seeing Hayes Carll and Steve Earll this week.

Routes and Branches Play List 01/09/10

This week while I was preparing for my show I saw that Hayes Carll was coming to Portland on the 19th and 20th of this month but not Eugene. Then as I looked a little closer I realized that the reason he wasn't stopping by Eugene this time around was that he was touring with Steve Earll. I didn't even know that Steve was making it out to the west coast. I'm a big fan of Steve Earll but I never have seen him perform. With Hayes Carll opening, these ought to be a couple of hot shows. I don't know if I can make both, but I'm going to try and make one of them.

A few new discs into the station that I liked this week. Ray Wylie Hubbard has released a disc he calls "A. Enlightenment B. Endarkenment (Hint: There Is No C)". It has a number of good tunes on it including "Drunken Poets Dream" which was co-written with Hayes Carll.
Another new disc that I liked this week is from Seattle artist Barton Carroll. His new disc is called "Together You And I". This is Carroll's Fourth release, but the first one that I'm familiar with. From listening to these songs it makes me want to check out his earlier releases.

The final disc on my new list this week is actually a movie sound track that was produced by T. Bome Burnett and the late Stephen Bruton called "Crazy Heart". The movie is out is some theaters but none locally yet. It stars Jeff Bridges as Bad Blake, a grizzled singer-songwriter now performing on the Southwestern bowling alley circuit. Bridges plays about a third of the songs on the disc with the others from artists like Buck Owens, Lightin' Hopkins, Townes Van Zandt and Ryan Bingham. Bingham has two songs including the theme song called "The Weary Kind". "Crazy Heart" is a great disc of music, I hope the movie is just as good.
