Routes and Branches Play List 12/25/10

This was the first year since I started hosting Routes & Branches that I have had a show on Christmas,so of course I had to play my annual holiday show this week. Each year I try to find new tunes to add to this show and this year I had new tunes from the Mynabirds, Drive By Truckers and The Indigo Girls.

I hope that all of my listeners have a joyous holiday season and a prosperous new year.

Routes and Branches Play List 12/18/10

This week I played my favorite new CDs of 2010. Trying to choose two hours worth of music from over the over 250 CDs that I have collected over the year was difficult at best. After the first couple of times through the collection I had narrowed it done to about 60, still too many for one show. I then narrowed the field by choosing the discs that had the most tracks marked as ones that I would play on the air. This is the list that I played today. In two weeks I will feature the discs that were left over from the final cut.

Routes and Branches Play List 12/11/10

This week I had the pleasure of having John Shipe and The Stagger And Sway in to the KRVM studio.
Shipe's new disc is called "Villain" and represents a move towards a more cinematic approach to his music, a reflection of his now living in Hollywood. He says that his song writing has become more refined as a storyteller and less about rocking out. Shipe says that as a songwriter he tries to tell clear specific stories with characters involved.
The Stagger And Sway, a local Eugene band that features the song writing of Mike Last. Last mostly writes about what is happening around him in an easy going Americana style which is evident in songs like "River Road" and "Sam Bond's Garage". The Stagger And Sway's current line up includes Jerry Abelin on bass, Brian Patrick on guitar and Kenny Howe on drums, all of which have been playing music around Eugene in a variety of groups for many years. As a local paper said about their music, The Stagger and Sway play "unassuming blue jeans music, untucked shirt lyrics and comfortable shoe rhythms".
Both CDs were produced by Ehren Ebbage who has collaborated with both Shipe and Last over the past several years. Shipe says that Ebbage is a fine musician that he really helps in the production by knowing which sounds and instruments are going to help tell the story. Last said that Ebbage was very instrumental in helping create the overall feel for the new album which had been recorded very quickly over two days in Portland. He said that Ebbage really got what their music is trying to do.

Routes and Branches Play List 12/04/10

Today's show was a tribute to one of my favorite DJ's, Mr. Felton Pruitt and his "Fat Music Show".
Years ago before Routes & Branches ever was a program, KRVM broadcasted the "Fat Music Show". I'm not sure when the show ended, but while I was going through some old cassette tapes I came across a show featuring Priutt's top 20 count down for the year 1997. I was able to put together the show list and went about trying to obtain a copy of the album (or at least song) to play on today's show. 20 Cds, 13 years old, how hard can it be to put this together? I must tell you it was harder that it looked. First of all not all of Pruitt's choices were big commercial hits, not that I mind, good music is good music. I started with the KRVM record libraries and found about a third of the list, followed by searching the local record stores and the library for a few more. I then looked on I-tunes to find the last songs and still came up short of the entire list. So deciding that this was all that I could give to this experiment, I have put together the following show with notes where I missed the list.
Along with researching the music for this show I looked up Felton Pruitt up on the Internet and I did find that he is on the air at KVMR (Are these call letters only a coincident?) in California every Monday afternoon. You can find more information at: http://www.kvmr.org/programs/fms/index.html

I started the show with A Danny Barnes tune by Keller and The Keels, because Barnes is playing in the area tonight and the album is named "Thief" which seemed to me a good title for today's show. What can I say, I was playing a cover show.

Routes and Branches Play List 11/27/10

Well with Thanksgiving over and Christmas around the corner, I had to play the new song from The Drive By Truckers called "The Thanksgiving Filter". I picked up their new 10" vinyl disc as birthday gift to myself this week. The B-side has the single "Used To Be A Cop". Both songs will be on the new DBT CD "Go-Go Boots" due in stores on February 15, 2011.

The other notable CD this week is the one from Shawn Camp which was recorded 16 years ago and shelved by his record company because they didn't think it would sell. Well after all these years and with help from new management at the top of the record company, Camp finally released his record and has called it "1994" the year that it was recorded. That's the way it goes in the music industry.

Routes and Branches Play List 11/20/10

I had social justice activist and songwriter Patrick Dodd into the KRVM studio this afternoon. Following in the footsteps of Woody Guthrie, Dodd writes modern day folk tunes that relate to current events and social issues like his tunes "Patriot Act Blues" and "Call Me A Tree Hugger". Like Guthrie, Dodd is more interested in people hearing his music than making a dollar from it and has all of his music available for free download from his website: http://www.patrickdodd.com/

Patrick Dodd is in town tonight as part of an annual fundraiser for the Civil Liberties Defense Center. The Civil Liberties Defense Center has represented over 300 social justice activists for free including Dodd's daughter who was protesting a timber sale in southern Oregon. They also hold "Know your rights" training workshops in our community. You can find more information about the CLDC at their website: http://www.cldc.org/

On a final note I opened and closed the show this week with the Lewi Longmire Band. I took My wife up to Portland to see Lewi's regular Thursday night gig at the Laurelthirst Public House on her birthday this year and we are planning to catch Lewi's Thanksgiving show this coming Wednesday to celebrate my birthday. Sounds like Our Kind Of Music.

Routes and Branches Play List 11/13/10

I had several calls this week when I played "Evangeline" by the band 7 Walkers including one from CD World asking about it for a listener/customer who was wanting buy it. Now if that is not the power of community radio like KRVM, I don't know what is.
7 Walkers is a fairly new band with an all star line-up including Bill Kreutzman, Papa Mali, Matt Hubbard and George Porter Jr. Most of the songs on the self-titled CD were co-written by Robert Hunter and Papa Mali. It is a great mix of Bay area rock and New Orleans Funk. It is what Kreutzman calls "Swampadelic."

We also played a couple of artists who had major birthdays this week. Susan Tedeschi turn 40 this past Tuesday and Neil Young turned 65 on Friday. Neil Young's new CD "Le Noise" is growing on me. I must say that the first time that I listened to it I felt like it was mostly a bunch of guitar noise. But as I've had time to check it out more cut by cut I find that I do like a couple of the more "folk song" sounding cuts like "Love and War" and "Peaceful Valley Boulevard."

Routes and Branches Play List 11/06/10

For such a short life, Gram Parsons sure has had a major influence on the Alt.Country music in this country. Parsons would have been 64 years old yesterday. Since The Americana Association is holding it's 4 annual Birthday Hoot for Parsons tomorrow at Threadgrill's in Austin, I thought that I would do a birthday tribute to start today's show.

Beyond that we have some great live music playing town this weekend. Tomorrow at the WOW hall we have the Harvest Hoedown featuring Danny Barnes, The Emmitt Nershi Band and Great American Taxi. This is bound to be a great show since all of these musicians have played with each other in the past, so I looking forward to some group jams.
Tonight, we have Brown Chicken Brown Cow String Band opening for the Blackberry Bushes over at Sam Bond's Garage. When I saw that BCBCSB was coming back to town I contacted them and asked if they would come in and perform on my show this afternoon. They are touring behind their 3rd album "...It's A Deep Subject" which I have yet to listen to, and I sure I will play on future Routes & Branches.

Routes and Branches Play List 10/23/10

I want to give a big KRVM Thank You to all of our listeners who contributed to our recent radiothon. You are the listeners in "Listener Powered". We wouldn't be able to bring you shows like Routes & Branches without your support. Thank you.

After a couple of weeks off and then radiothon, my stack of new un-aired CDs was getting pretty tall. One of my favorites was the new disc from Stan Ridgway. Listening to his distinct voice took me back to my college radio days when I played his band Wall Of Voodoo and their hit tune "Mexican Radio" on my show. Ridgway's new album "Neon Mirage" has a depth of feeling that comes from a seasoned songwriter.
I also liked the new CD "Break Til You Bend" from local band The Stagger & Sway. Anyone who has been to Sam Bond's Garage will appreciate the Sway's song about the local watering hole. Produced by Ehren Ebbage "Break Til You Bend" is Stagger & Sway's first full length CD following their debut EP "Time Changes". They call it Americana with a Rock and Roll temper. I call it Our Kind of Music. The Stagger & Sway will hold their official CD release party at (where else) Sam Bond's Garage on Saturday December 11th.

Routes and Branches Play List 10/16/10

After two weeks away it was good to get back to my show this week. With it being the week of our Fall Membership drive at KRVM, I had to trade telling stories about the artists and songs I was playing for talking about how fortunate we are to have a radio station like KRVM.

We are a MUSIC station, which makes us unique even in the public radio community. Because of our diverse community of volunteer DJ's, our listeners can experience a wide variety of musical styles each week. But it takes the whole community to keep a station like KRVM alive and well and that is where our listener members come in. KRVM like any other business or organization depends on those who use the service to help pay for it. If you are a regular reader of this blog or listen to my show on Saturday, please consider becoming a contributing member of KRVM. Go to: http://www.krvm.org/ and click the Pledge Now button. If everyone gives a little we all can receive a lot.

Tim Little

Routes and Branches Play List 10/09/10

I would first like to thank Shotgun Majors for sitting in for me last week while I was at the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festival in San Fransico and this week to Mike Meyer for covering me while I'm at our local home improvement show for my business.

Last weekend's Hardly Strictly Bluegrass show in Golden Gate park was everything I had hoped it would be. With over 80 performances throughout the weekend it was hard to see everyone we wanted to, but my wife and I did catch 21 different performances over the course of the weekend. Highlights for us include Patty Griffin with Buddy Miller on guitar, The Dukes of September which featured Boz Scaggs, Donald Fagen and Micheal McDonald (Friday night's closer), Band Of Heathens, Guy Clark, A songwriter circle which included Steve Earle, Robert Earl Keen, John Doe & David Onley, then on to Jerry Jeff Walker, Buddy Miller and closing Saturday evening with Steve Earle and the Dukes. Sunday's acts included The Felice Brothers, Martin Sexton, James McMurtry, Dave Alvin & The Guilty Women (Dave's brother Phil was there and played a tune with Dave), Rosanne Cash and Yonder Mountain Stringband. We closed the weekend catching the end of Del McCory's set followed by Emmylou Harris backed up by Buddy Miller and friends.

It was an increadible weekend of music free to the public thanks to the generosity of Warren Hellman. Thanks Warren for throwing the best party in the country.

Routes and Branches Play List 09/25/10

As usual this week was a mix of what I have been listening to lately and what I'm looking forward to hearing in the coming week. I had a listener send me a copy of the Moonlighters' 1977 self titled album and another listener send me the Brothers Comatose new disc. I found some great music on both and played a cut form each today. I also saw Ryan Bingham, Willie Nelson and The Conjugal Visitors this past week.

In the coming week I'm looking forward to seeing Hayes Carll when he stops by Sam Bond's Garage this week and then all of the artists who are attending next weekend's Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival. At the top of my list are Jerry Jeff Walker and Dave Alvin & The Guilty Women. Thanks to Shotgun Majors who will be filling in for me while I'm at HSB.

Routes and Branches Play List 09/18/10

I had an itch to hear some Jerry Jeff Walker this week and all of my JJW is on old cassette tapes which you can hardly listen to anymore. So I went looking for some of Walker's music in our station's library but I came up empty there. It seems that it has been some time since Jerry Jeff was last played on KRVM. So, I had to correct this situation by purchasing a "best of" CD at the store today.

Jerry Jeff Walker is scheduled to perform at The Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival in San Fransisco's Golden Gate Park the first weekend in October. I think that I saw him years ago before I moved out here to Oregon, but I'm not completely sure. I am totally looking forward to catching his show at HSB in a couple of weeks.

My other feature artist today was Ryan Bingham since he will be in town tomorrow night opening for Willie Nelson. Bingham has come along way in the short amount of time since he was last here playing John Henry's. At this rate he will be the headliner the next time he comes to town.

Routes and Branches Play List 09/11/10

This week I had local musician Willie McEachern into the studio to share a couple of tracks from his forthcoming solo album Knee Deep. Listeners to my show may be more familiar with Willie's bass playing for the band Sideroads. Willie wrote 3 of the tunes on the Sideroads album Destinations which was released in 2009. This solo project he says he created mostly by him in his home studio with some help from other local musicians including some of his Sideroadsbuddys. Look for Willie to feature some of his new tunes when he plays with Sideroads at Cosmic Pizza on Saturday, September 18th.

The Americana Music Awards were held in Nashville this week and I was happy to see Hayes Carll take home the award for new/emerging artist this year. He had been nominated for it before so I not sure if he is all that new but at least he is gaining some national recognition now. He will be at Sam Bond's Garage on Sept. 29.
I was also impressed to see Ryan Bingham get Artist of the Year this time around. He had some pretty good musicians to beat this year including Patty Griffin, Levon Helm, Steve Earle and Ray Wylie Hubbard. Bingham also picked up "Song of the Year" with his tune The Weary Kind which he wrote with T Bone Burnett for the movie, Crazy Heart.
You can find all the award information at: http://americanamusic.org/

Routes and Branches Play List 09/04/10

Inspiration for this week's show came from 3 sources; The Americana Music Association's upcoming awards, The Sister's Folk Festival and Labor Day. Last year I played a whole show of labor day oriented songs. This year I had to narrow it down to a couple of sets.

The Sister's Folk Festival next weekend has a great line-up on the schedule. I tried to pick out my favorites which I have played on past shows. That way I left plenty of artists for Karen to play on Acoustic Junction which follows my show.

If I could go to any and every Americana event or festival that I wanted to, I would be going to Nashville this week for the Americana Music Association's Music Festival. I started off the show with 3 of the 4 songs which are nominated for "Song of the year". Yes, I played both Ray Willie Hubbard's and Hayes Carll's versions of Drunken Poets Dream. They wrote the song together but it is Hubbard's version that is up for song of the year. I first heard it when Hayes Carll played it at Sam Bond's Garage and ever since I've had a preference for the way he does it. I hope that they play it together for the awards show.
Look for me to feature the winners on next week's show.

Routes and Branches Play List 08/21/10

I started today's show with a couple of artists who had birthdays this week. Robert Plant turned 62 and John Hiat turned 58 on Friday.

I threw in some ZZ Top and Lynyrd Skynyrd into the mix since they are both coming to the Oregon State Fair in the next couple of weeks. I followed them with some Direks Bently since he is also coming to the state fair.

Robert Earl Keen is performing a couple of shows in Oregon this week. On Tuesday he is Roseburg at their Music on the Half shell series, and the following night in Portland. Blake Phillips recently had a chance to talk with Robert and has done a good job writing up their conversation on his blog http://ourkindofmusic.wordpress.com/. If you're a Robert Earl Keen fan, I totally recommend checking it out.

Routes and Branches Play List 08/07/10

The Band Of Heathens rolled through Eugene this past week and despite the small size of the stage at Sam Bond's Garage they put on a great show. Normally I try to play more of a band before they appear in town, but with my busy summer their show snuck up on me, so I tried to make it up this week by making them my feature artist on this week's show.

The second half of my show, I counted down the top ten albums on this week's Americana charts. The list starts at 4pm. with Jim Lauderdale and finishes with Paul Thorn sitting at number 1 for the past 3 weeks.

Routes and Branches Play List 07/31/10

My thanks go out to Shotgun Majors for filling in for me last week. With all of the summer festivals going on it has been hard to keep up with the new releases coming into the station. I tried to catch up on as many as I could this week with a couple of older tunes sprinkled in.

A favorite of mine is the new Los Lobos album Tin Can Trust. Wouldn't you know that it would take a band from East L.A. to do a good cover of the song West L.A. Fadeaway. Los Lobos new album is mostly new original music mixing up the sound like they usually do between traditionally sounding tracks to their own style of Rock 'n' Roll. Lots of good tunes which I'm sure that will make it onto my "best of list" this year.

Routes and Branches Play List 07/17/10

I had the pleasure of having Chris Chandler and Paul Benoit stop by the KRVM studios this afternoon before their show at Sam Bond's Garage this evening. Although Chris has been a regular at the Oregon Country Fair for years, he just recently came to my attention with his new CD with Paul called So, Where Ya Headed?.
I caught their performance last weekend at the fair and this evening and I must say that I love how they mix Chris' poetry with original and contemporary songs played and sung by Paul. This is the next generation of folk music/storytelling in America.

Routes and Branches Play List 07/03/10

All of the music I played this afternoon featured bands playing around town tonight, next week at the Oregon Country Fair, or the following weekend at the Northwest String Summit. I wouldn't normally play Moe on my show even though I like their music a lot, most of it doesn't fit, but they are one of the bands performing at the Northwest String Summit and so it sent me looking for a country flavoured tune and "Can't Seem To Find" had enough twang and some Neil Young style harmonica to it for me. Other artists performing at the Northwest String Summit include Darol Anger, Danny Barnes, Crooked Still, The Infamous Stringdusters, The Urban Monroes and of course The Yonder Mountain String Band. You can find all the details to this weekend of music at: www.stringsummit.com

I had my new favorite band into the studio this afternoon. Shotgun Majors turn me onto I See Hawks In L.A. and I happened to catch their show at Sam Bond's Garage this week. They had me hooked with the first tune they performed "Raised By Hippies". Anyone who knows me and listens to this song will know why. Then when I found out that Dave Alvin said that they were "one of California's unique treasures" I was totally on board. Their most recent album Shoulda Been Gold is a mix of tracks from their previous albums with 5 new previously unreleased tracks. I find the whole album a joy to listen to and I will be bringing you more them on my show in the future.

The rest of the tunes on today's list are of performers appearing at next week's Oregon Country Fair. KRVM will be broadcasting Live from the Blue Moon Stage of the fair all 3 days next weekend. Appearing during my show will be Opal Creek and Casey Neil and friends. If you can't be at the fair be sure to tune in to KRVM to listen to the fair.

Routes and Branches Play List 06/19/10

All the way from Folly Beach, South Carolina Dangermuffin brought their Organic, sand-blasted roots rock, with a sweet jam spread music to the KRVM studio. Dangermuffin is a trio made up of songwriter, guitarist and lead vocalist Dan Lotti, lead guitarist Mike Sivilli, and percussionist Steven Sandifer. With one foot rooted in southern Americana and the other hangin' out with the jam band sound, Dangermuffin has the groove for a good time.

Routes and Branches Play List 06/12/10

The Ashland based band One Horse Shy will be in town this next week touring behind their new CD Better Life. I had the chance to talk with Bob Evoniuk this past week about the new album which I featured on today's show along with some tracks from both of their albums. For a band who has members living 300 miles apart these days, they sound more together on this second album. Manda Bryn and Cris Kelly are still the primary song writers for the band with the rest of the band adding their parts as they develop each song. One Horse Shy's high energy shows are bound to get you up and dancing.

A new band coming to our area that was highly recommended to me is the group 18 Switchbacks. They are a new bluegrass (and more) band from Boulder, Colorado. Their self titled debut EP has seven smoking cuts on it and I featured the lead track "Goin' Down The Mountain" and a second called "Big Creek Ranch".

Routes and Branches Play List 06/05/10

I took my wife up to Portland for her birthday on Thursday to see Lewi Longmire and his band for their regular (6-8pm.)Thursday gig at the Laurelthirst pub. We managed to get the last table before the place completely filled up as the band started. From the first song to the end the dance floor was completely filled with everyone having a great time. Lewi and band mixed it up doing both originals and covers from the likes of Jimi Hendrix to Bob Dylan. We asked folks around us, Is it like this every Thursday night? They replied with a resounding YES!! I suppose it is a good thing that I live so far away, otherwise I would become a regular too. Sorta like church.

This week I also had the Whopner County Country Alstars into the KRVM studio. They have recently released their 3rd album called 7-10 Split. Ten more great Whopner County originals about everyday life from "Deception" to "The Whiskey Wins Again" with that great Whopner Country sound backing them up. In the studio they played one of my favorite Gregg Vollstedt songs called "I'll Be With You Tonight".

Routes and Branches Play List 05/29/10

Some really good "Roots Music" has been coming out lately. Some of the groups playing that old time sound are; The Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band, South Memphis String Band and Mulebone. They are all really good, but my favorite has to be the new Pokey LaFarge & The South City Three's new disc Riverboat Soul. It's a good title for the juke-joint style music that Pokey and the band play. Pokey's song writing has the soul of an Old-Time band with the freshness of today's electric music. I like several of the tunes on this album, but my favorite has to be "Won't Make Love At All". Expect to hear more from Pokey LaFarge & The South City Three in the coming weeks on Routes & Branches. They will be in Eugene on June 20th.

Routes and Branches Play List 05/22/10

I had the pleasure to have Wynn Taylor into the KRVM studio this afternoon. Taylor is an emerging Austin artist who is out on a mini tour of the Oregon. Local Austin transplant Scott Eastburn met Taylor on a tour back to Austin with Jake Payne who now owns the Dixie Creek Saloon up in Tangent, Oregon. They immediately
formed a friendship playing music together.
Taylor found his musical beginnings in the church where his father was a pastor. He wanted to be the cool guy singing songs to the youth group around the camp fire. For a young emerging artist Taylor has the sound of a musician who has been around many camp fires. On this mini tour of Oregon Taylor will be backed up by Jake Payne and Scott Eastburn and their band Dixie Creek. Scott says that he and Jake are working on completing their second album together. I'm looking forward to hearing more from them.

Dan Hicks was my feature artist today since he and his Hot Licks are playing in Eugene tonight. I had a chance to talk with him on the phone this week which I mixed in with songs from his various albums. His new album Tangled Tales is being released on both vinyl and CD and is some of his best work to date. Along with the Hot Licks, Hicks brought in several additional musicians to play on this release including David Grissman, Roy Rogers and Charlie Musselwhite to name a few. Most of the songs are Hick's originals with a few covers including a good version Bob Dylan's Subterranean Homesick Blues.

Routes and Branches Play List 05/08/10

Merle Haggard did perform this past Monday at the Hult Center. It was a great show featuring many old classics and a few songs off his new album at the end of his show.
At this point in his life I think the title track of his new album I am What I am describes him the best. Since Sunday is Mother's Day this week I had to close my show with Haggard's Classic Mama Tried.

This week's show also had Gavin Wahl-Stephens and The New Americans in to the station to play a couple of songs live for us including an as yet unrecorded song entitled Overdraft Protection . Wahl-Stephens and The New Americans have a great northwest feel to their mix of Americana/Rock. Gavin's song writing is strong and he is backed up by the excellent musicianship of The New Americans. I'm sure that we will be listening to more of their music in the future.

Routes and Branches Play List 05/01/10

I saw some great music this past week. It started with the Lewi Longmire band at Sam Bond's garage last Saturday night. Lewi and the band were in fine form and started the show with his tune "When Your Time Comes A-Callin'" so I started my show this week with the same tune.

Merle Haggard was suppose to play in town last Wednesday evening but had to postpone the show till Monday. I'm still looking forward to seeing him and I hope that this little bit of rest has helped him recover.

Arlo Guthrie has had his family out on tour since the fall and came through Corvallis this past week. They have an wonderful family oriented show which even has the youngest in the family on stage. Arlo is at his best as the story telling grandfather offering great tales of his father and his own experiences throughout the evening.

This show also had a set of Willie Nelson and Lyle Lovett music in it since I was giving away tickets for their shows here in Eugene this summer. We also want to wish Willie a Happy birthday.

Routes and Branches Play List 04/24/10

I started today's show featuring Roky Erickson and Okkervil River. They have a new record together. Roky Erickson is an Austin Artist better known for his Psychedelic music with the 13th Floor Elevators. After many years of struggling with personal issues Erickson sent Will Sheff of Okkervil River a bunch of material he had written and asked Sheff to pick out tunes for an album together. True love Cast Out All Evil is the result of that collaboration.

Lewi Longmire stopped by the KRVM studios this afternoon to talk and play a couple of tunes. He is working on a new EP of songs that he is going to record on tape and release on vinyl. Trying to get that warm sound you get from records. He gave us a preview of one of the tunes (solo acoustic version)called "Save Yourself". The Lewi Longmire band plays Sam Bond's Garage here in Eugene tonight.

I also played a fair amount of Merle Haggard since he is coming to town this coming Wednesday. At 73 years old Haggard may be doing his best work ever. His new CD I Am What I Am released just this week is excellent. I have not seen Haggard in over 30 years and I'm very much looking forward to his show this week.

Routes and Branches Play List 04/17/10

Five new discs to the playlist this week. The first one is the Evangenitals EP released last year. They are a band from the Los angles area whom I had never heard of before. Besides liking their name, I like their country, rockabilly, punk sound. Looking them up on-line I found that they have a couple of earlier releases as well as the new EP.
Another band who was new to me this week was Shoebox Letters who are from the Portland area. Their recent release Damaged Goods is a mix of Americana and Alt-country songs about everyday life from the heartaches to the joys. I liked several tunes on the disc.
Jakob Dylan has a new release called Women & Country that is produced by T Bone Burnett and also features Neko Case and Kelly Hogan on vocals. I like this CD a lot more than Dylan's last album. It has more of an Americana sound to it than his previous releases.
Otis Gibbs has a new CD Joe Hill's Ashes which reflects the real experiences Gibbs has had. Done in more of a roots style the CD has the sound of a real troubadour. Also done in the roots style is my final new disc New Morning, by Mulebone. Mulebone is mix of Hugh Pool's excellent blues/roots guitar and John Ragusa's incredible mix of conch shell, Jews harp, cornet, all manner of flutes, tin whistle and back-up vocals. I find John's tasteful additions give Hugh's traditional sounds a sense of evolution. Their CD is a mix of tunes written by Pool and covers from the likes of Fred McDowell,Rev Gary Davis and Merle Travis.

Routes and Branches Play List 04/10/10

This week was just what I have been listening to lately. I did have a few threads connecting some of the songs together. Like, Jimmy LaFave had Carrie Rodriguez playing fiddle and vocals on his song "Hideaway Girl" so I followed it with Carrie doing a Lucinda Williams song "Steal Your Love". Lucinda finished the set doing her own tune "Righteously".
The second hour got into some Bluegrass since I had tickets to give away to Trampled By Turtles. Besides the Turtles the set included Pert Near Sandstone and Green Mountain Bluegrass Band. I had bluegrass in my head since I had filled in for Ramblin' Robert on Miles of Bluegrass last Monday evening.

I'm also looking forward to the Lewi Longmire Band's return to Eugene two weeks from now on April 24. Hopefully, He will be able to stop by KRVM for a chat that Saturday afternoon.

Routes and Branches Play List 04/03/10

This was the second weekend of our Spring pledge drive. I want to send out a big Thank you to all of the listeners who have made their financial contribution to KRVM.

Since Money is what the pledge drive is all about I choose Chuck Cannon's Song "Money" to start the show. The first line in the song is "Money, I ain't got enough." and the last line is "Money, You can't take it with you when you go." What falls in between is our never ending struggle to acquire more money. I ended the show with Cannon's other song about money called "Money Don't Matter". This song starts with the fact that we spend most of our lives trying to make money and evolves into what our world might be like if money didn't matter any more. He says "I wish Love was a coin of the realm. Where everyone is rich and nobody is poor."

Both songs talk to me during this time when we reach out to our listening community for the financial support to continue broadcasting. If Love were money KRVM would never have to worry about how to keep the bills paid to stay on the air, because this community has shown us a lot of love over the years. However, KRVM has to earn money to pay the bills which allow us to continue bring "Real Variety In Music" to the airwaves of western Oregon. Please share a little love by donating generously to KRVM today! Thank you.

Routes and Branches Play List 03/20/10

For the first day of spring I played a whole show of recently released material with one exception, a Townes Van Zandt tune at the end of a set of songs which were either about Townes or that he had a part in the writing. The most unusual of these was the David Broza tune which was an unpublished Townes poem put to music by David. David and Townes played together once at a song pull hosted by Linda Lowe back in 1994 and everyone including Townes' family were surprised that he left Broza a bunch of unpublished poetry. Long story short, Broza has now released a new album Night Dawn of 11 tunes based on Townes poetry and one instrumental which he wrote in Townes honor called "Too Old To Die Young". You can find the entire story at: http://nightdawn.davidbroza.net/.

Also featured on today's show was the disc East Nashville Vol.3 More Music From The Other Side. It is a disc of various artists who come from Nashville's lesser known east side and have recorded with Red Beet Records. of the 19 tracks on the disc I found over half of them to be really good tunes performed by artists that I had never heard of before.

I ended my show with a couple of tracks from the disc Coal Country Music. Coal mining is still a major industry in Appalachia and the CD is a companion to the film Coal Country, which documents the devastation wrought by mountaintop removal and the cycle of coal mining and combustion. 100% of the net proceeds from the sale of the CD go to the Alliance for Appalachia to STOP MOUNTAINTOP REMOVAL. You can go to http://www.coalcountrymusic.com/ to find out more about the film and CD.

Routes and Branches Play List 03/13/10

I had a schedule conflict this week between my radio show and our local spring home improvement show which I attend for my business. So this week's radio show was put together and canned from the music files on our station's computer. Fortunately many of the artists that I like to play on Routes & Branches also show up in our weekday music mix.

I'm still catching up on all of the new CDs that have come into the station while I was on vacation. Next week I will have a whole crop of new releases to play for you.

Routes and Branches Play List 03/06/10

I want to thank Shotgun Majors for sitting in for me while I was gone.
I have recently returned from Cayamo 2010 and I must say that it has to be one of my favorite vacations ever. Cayamo was a music festival cruise with artists like Lyle Lovett, John Hiatt, Emmylou Harris, Steve Earle, and Brandie Calile for the headliners along with several other artists and bands to fill out the schedule. We saw over 25 shows in the 5 days we were on board.
Every artist on today's play list except Ryan Bingham and Hot Buttered Rum were on the cruise. I opened the show with Ryan Bingham's The Weary Kind since he is up for the Oscar with it this weekend. He certainly gets my vote. I played the Hot Buttered Rum cut because I was giving tickets away to their upcoming show next weekend at the WOW hall.
