Routes & Branches 12/19/15

I had the pleasure of having Steep Ravine into the KRVM studio this afternoon. The bay area band was in Eugene touring behind their second album "The Pedestrian".
I had to go looking in our bluegrass collection to find this CD and I found that they may be based in bluegrass, but Steep Ravine is on the edge exploring new interpretations of jazz, folk and pop. They said that adding percussion to their instrumentation has opened them up to being more than just a string band and brings new opportunity for musical exploration. This is a band I'm going to keep listening to as long as they play.

Otherwise, I played a bunch of tunes I only play this time of year. Happy Holidays Y'all!!!

Routes & Branches 10/24/15

The band River Whyless stopped by the station this afternoon to play some tunes for my listeners. I really love to see young people embracing and expanding the boundaries of folk music. River Whyless does all of that by combining great vocal harmonies and traditional instruments with new ways to play those instruments like playing a banjo as a drum rather than picking the strings. They say that the root of a song starts with a guitar and vocals but then the band will experiment with various ways to play it until they like what they have created. The songs that make into the recording studio are the ones they like with some getting recycled or left behind. From what I heard today, River Whyless is ready to take folk music in a whole new direction.

Steve Earle and his Dukes are coming to Eugene this week. So, in anticipation of the show I brought my entire Steve Earle collection to the station today. I have been a Steve Earle fan for as long as I can remember. I enjoy his songs and his stories. When I get the chance I even enjoy his radio show.
Today I enjoyed reading the April Mother Jones interview with Steve http://www.motherjones.com/media/2015/04/steve-earle-interview-terraplane-tour in which he talks about playing with other musicians in a circle and it's his turn to play. That is when it matters. So, I decided to begin the show with a set of tunes from the album "Together At The Bluebird Café" in which Steve shares the stage with his mentors Guy Clark and Townes Van Zandt.
My second Earle set focused mostly on his Copperhead Road album which was my first in a long collection. In the second hour played a couple of Earle's albums that don't get much time on the air "Transcendental Blues" and "Jerusalem" finishing the show with some tunes from his more recent albums including this year's "Terraplane".

I had 3 members of the musical drama Romancing The West stop by the KRVM studios  this afternoon. They are putting together a western tour which will be bring the show to Eugene this summer and were in town to play a show more focused on the talent of Martin Gerschwitz one of the members of the cast who is currently on  a small western tour of his own. Gerschwitz also a member of Iron Butterfly represents the modern music era ('60's to present) of the Romancing The West show which covers the entire history of the western U.S. from pioneer days to the present in a musical, storytelling performance. Attention all Yonder Mountain String Band Fans out there; The band is doing well and sounding better than ever.
The addition of Allie Kral on violin and  Jake Jolliff  replacing former band member Jeff Austin on mandolin have turned out to be excellent choices for the band. Jolliff a former member of the band Joy Kills Sorrow when he won a 2012 national mandolin championship has the licks to easily fill the roll Austin had in the band. The addition of Kral to the line-up really adds to the YMSB sound in two very important ways. First by adding in stellar fiddle playing which previously had been an occasional treat at regular shows, and secondly by the fact that for the first time the band's vocal harmonies include a female voice, something the band says they are enjoying.
YMSB's 6th studio album "Black Sheep" is in the can but not due for release until June, but the band treated us to 3 of the new songs in the KRVM studios this afternoon. I must say that if the rest of the album sounds as good as these three tracks, I will be playing them all on this radio show.

Well when I looking up my birthday notes I noticed that today was Townes Van Zandt's birthday, so he became my featured artist for today's show. I'm not sure when I started listening to Townes, probably around the same time I started listening to Steve Earle, which was so long ago that I couldn't put a date on it. My favorite recording of Townes is actually one in which he shares the stage with Earle and Guy Clark. Recorded in September of '95 Together At the Bluebird Café was a benefit organized by Susanna Clark (Clark's wife) as a benefit for the Interfaith Dental Clinic of  Nashville of which Townes had benefited from because of loosing a gold tooth which he mentions during the show. A great recording of three songwriters and friends.

I first of all want to thank all of the listeners who contributed to KRVM during our recent pledge drive. You, truly are the people who keep this great community resource playing the music we all love to hear. Thank You!!!
Last week I ended my show playing a portion of Kind of Bird due to the fact that the song is 18 minuets long and I only had five left in the show. So, this week, after hearing it performed live last Thursday evening, I decided to start my show with it and let the whole track play. Something that is only found on listener supported radio like KRVM.
Doug Seegers performed in Portland last night after my radio show so I was featuring several tracks from his album Going Down To The River. After hearing him live I must say that he is the closest performer to sound like Hank Williams that I have ever seen. It was an enjoyable evening of country music performed as it should be. Barbara Lamb was excellent on the fiddle with just the right accent to Doug's guitar and voice, giving every song the right amount of swing.

I recently had a chance to talk with one of my guitar heroes Warren Haynes. Haynes will be in Eugene this next week with his band Gov't Mule and John Scofield. They are touring behind the new Sco-Mule album which was recorded 20 years ago with the original Gov't Mule line-up of Haynes, Woody and Abts. Naturally this album is more jazz oriented than other Mule albums with the influences that Scofield brings to the group.
Although I am a fan of Gov't Mule no matter what music they play, I am most found of Haynes work the Allman Brother's band and Phil Lesh & Friends. I was also pleasantly surprised to learn that he got his start playing in David Allen Coe's band back in the '80s.
Also part of today's show I played Rosanne Cash's Grammy wining song,  A Feather's Not A Bird off her Grammy wining album The River & The Thread  and Old Crow Medicine Show's album Remedy which picked up the Grammy for Best Folk album. The Blackberry Bushes  and The Mastersons will both be in Eugene this week so I played them as well.
