Anyone who knows me would say that I have a strong passion for live music, from local artists to national performers, which explains my absence for the past couple of weeks and how local guitarist Will Brown all ended up on today's show.
I saw Will perform over at Cosmic sometime last fall and totally enjoyed his finger style guitar playing. After completing his second CD of original tracks I suggested that he stop by and play some tunes for my listeners. You can find out more about Will and his music at: http://www.willbrownmusic.com/
The past couple of weeks filled me with so much music that I just had to share some of my favorite highlights today and I know that I did not get to all of them. Most notably absent from today's list are The Steep Canyon Rangers who were the host band on Mountain Song At Sea, but I will have plenty of more opportunity to feature them on future shows since they will be coming to Eugene in May. Cayamo has so much going on at one time that there are always some shows that I don't get to and two hours on the radio is not enough time to feature all the artists.
One of the best things about Mountain Song and Cayamo is hearing performers that I have never heard before. My first day on Cayamo I met some folks from New Mexico and I asked them who they suggest I check out and they said Max Gomez. I caught his first show on the boat and picked up his cd the next day. On Mountain Song my favorite new discovery was The Kruger Brothers. They made playing well look easy.
There are many memories that are special from this journey but I have to say that my highlight was sharing a beer with Dave Bromberg on the pool deck while watching John Fullbright preform.

It was sad news this week when I heard about the passing of Pete Seeger. I was only 5 years old when my parents took me to my first Pete Seeger concert. I can remember the whole audience singing along with Pete which was his favorite part of performing. Pete was an inspiration to me because he made music that was accessible to everyone and often spoke of the struggles we all go through in this life. I learned several of his songs when I started playing guitar in high school. He is still an inspiration since he kept living his songs right up to the day he passed. God is counting on us now to continue Pete's work by keeping his music alive and well.
Today's show also had a guest appearance from Lindsay Lou Rilko who is better known as Lindsay Lou & The Flatbellys. She stopped by without the Flatbellys this afternoon and shared with me some of her family history and how she became a member of the Flatbellys. She sang a beautiful a cappella tune she wrote called "Smooth & Groovy" with so much feeling that she filled our studio with the sound of her voice.

My wife was the one who turned me on to Matt Andersen over a year ago when she was searching for versions of "Wagon Wheel" on youtube, but until last night we had never seen him perform. And what a performer he is, an incredible guitarist, getting more out of an acoustic guitar than most of artists I have seen. He also has an amazing vocal range and sings with such feeling. Since I finally have some of his music to play for my listeners, I decided to make him my feature artist for today's show.

I have been listening to Lucinda Williams 25th anniversary release of her self titled Rough Trade album and decided to make it my feature disc for today's show. Although this was her 3rd album, this was the first of Williams' albums to make radio air-play and for many of us, myself included, was the first time that we even heard of Williams. Listening back to the whole album again I was surprised as to how many of the tunes I not only recognized but had a strong appreciation for. If I was listening to this album as a new record today, over half of the tracks would be marked to be played on my show and it would be on my 'best of the year' list too.

Routes & Branches 1/11/14
I started today's show with the Allman Brothers since news this week said that Derek Trucks and Warren Haynes would be leaving the band at the end of the year. This may mean the end of the band since Greg is getting on in years and may not want to continue performing.
I saw a great show by Red Molly last night and had to play their version of Robert Johnson's "Come On Into My Kitchen". They also performed "Coal Tattoo which I first heard on Rich Kirby and Michael Kline's 1977 June Appal recording "They Can't Put It Back" when I was in high school so I had to dig out the album and play the track today.
I also had the opportunity to see Del Barber perform last week and was very impressed with his songs. I picked up both of his CD's and played a track off each.
The rest of the mix was mostly between new releases and artists coming to our area in the near future.

"The Best Of The Rest"
It is so hard to narrow down a whole year's worth of new music to fit into a 2 hour show. With that said, there are still many CD's from last year that I like and still could not get to on today's show. With a couple of exceptions all of the discs I played were released last year. The first exception was the Whitey Morgan track which was released in 2010 but was added to my collection in 2013 when I saw him perform at Sam Bond's where he will be again next week. My second exception is the "Hard Working Americans" which is not even in stores till later this month but was released to radio in December and was my number one choice for last month's FAR Chart.
