Routes and Branches Play List 01/23/10

This week's highlight was seeing Steve Earle for the first time. Steve is looking good on this tour behind his new album Townes. As to be expected the show was mostly a mix of stories and songs by and about Townes Van Zandt. Earle did mix in a few older tunes like The Galway Girl and City of Immigrants in which he also talked about living in New York City. I really appreciate the stories Steve told between songs. It's a rich oral history told just like it was done in the days before TV.
Steve also shared with the audience that he and his wife, Allison Moorer are expecting a baby boy this spring to be named John Henry Earle. Moorer is releasing her new album Crows on February 9th. I just received a copy of it today. Look for some of it on future shows.
Earle also let us know that he has plans to record a new CD this year with T. Bone Burnett. I'm looking forward to that one.

Hayes Carll opened the show for Steve Earle. Hayes performed well, but I think he felt like the opening act which he was. His set was a short mix of songs from his three albums. I was not familiar with Carll's 2nd album Little Rock so I picked up a copy from him. There are several good songs on the album including the title track which I started my show with today.
