Routes and Branches Play List 11/27/10

Well with Thanksgiving over and Christmas around the corner, I had to play the new song from The Drive By Truckers called "The Thanksgiving Filter". I picked up their new 10" vinyl disc as birthday gift to myself this week. The B-side has the single "Used To Be A Cop". Both songs will be on the new DBT CD "Go-Go Boots" due in stores on February 15, 2011.

The other notable CD this week is the one from Shawn Camp which was recorded 16 years ago and shelved by his record company because they didn't think it would sell. Well after all these years and with help from new management at the top of the record company, Camp finally released his record and has called it "1994" the year that it was recorded. That's the way it goes in the music industry.

Routes and Branches Play List 11/20/10

I had social justice activist and songwriter Patrick Dodd into the KRVM studio this afternoon. Following in the footsteps of Woody Guthrie, Dodd writes modern day folk tunes that relate to current events and social issues like his tunes "Patriot Act Blues" and "Call Me A Tree Hugger". Like Guthrie, Dodd is more interested in people hearing his music than making a dollar from it and has all of his music available for free download from his website: http://www.patrickdodd.com/

Patrick Dodd is in town tonight as part of an annual fundraiser for the Civil Liberties Defense Center. The Civil Liberties Defense Center has represented over 300 social justice activists for free including Dodd's daughter who was protesting a timber sale in southern Oregon. They also hold "Know your rights" training workshops in our community. You can find more information about the CLDC at their website: http://www.cldc.org/

On a final note I opened and closed the show this week with the Lewi Longmire Band. I took My wife up to Portland to see Lewi's regular Thursday night gig at the Laurelthirst Public House on her birthday this year and we are planning to catch Lewi's Thanksgiving show this coming Wednesday to celebrate my birthday. Sounds like Our Kind Of Music.

Routes and Branches Play List 11/13/10

I had several calls this week when I played "Evangeline" by the band 7 Walkers including one from CD World asking about it for a listener/customer who was wanting buy it. Now if that is not the power of community radio like KRVM, I don't know what is.
7 Walkers is a fairly new band with an all star line-up including Bill Kreutzman, Papa Mali, Matt Hubbard and George Porter Jr. Most of the songs on the self-titled CD were co-written by Robert Hunter and Papa Mali. It is a great mix of Bay area rock and New Orleans Funk. It is what Kreutzman calls "Swampadelic."

We also played a couple of artists who had major birthdays this week. Susan Tedeschi turn 40 this past Tuesday and Neil Young turned 65 on Friday. Neil Young's new CD "Le Noise" is growing on me. I must say that the first time that I listened to it I felt like it was mostly a bunch of guitar noise. But as I've had time to check it out more cut by cut I find that I do like a couple of the more "folk song" sounding cuts like "Love and War" and "Peaceful Valley Boulevard."

Routes and Branches Play List 11/06/10

For such a short life, Gram Parsons sure has had a major influence on the Alt.Country music in this country. Parsons would have been 64 years old yesterday. Since The Americana Association is holding it's 4 annual Birthday Hoot for Parsons tomorrow at Threadgrill's in Austin, I thought that I would do a birthday tribute to start today's show.

Beyond that we have some great live music playing town this weekend. Tomorrow at the WOW hall we have the Harvest Hoedown featuring Danny Barnes, The Emmitt Nershi Band and Great American Taxi. This is bound to be a great show since all of these musicians have played with each other in the past, so I looking forward to some group jams.
Tonight, we have Brown Chicken Brown Cow String Band opening for the Blackberry Bushes over at Sam Bond's Garage. When I saw that BCBCSB was coming back to town I contacted them and asked if they would come in and perform on my show this afternoon. They are touring behind their 3rd album "...It's A Deep Subject" which I have yet to listen to, and I sure I will play on future Routes & Branches.
