It is Spring time and the new releases are blooming. This week I'm really liking new CD's from Grant Peeples, who's "Prior Convictions" have made some music that matters. Also on this week's favorites list is the new Hank Williams III album "Long Gone Daddy". The lead title track, a remake of his Grandfather's "I'm A Long Gone Daddy" makes me feel like he is channeling his Grandfathers ghost.
I'm also liking Portland artist Dan Weber who's "Hank & Jesus" tune is also related to Hank Williams Sr.
The press sheet that came with John Fullbright's new disc "From The Ground Up" had a recommendation on it from James McMurtry so I knew that this was going to be good. In the second hour I went into "Rehab" with New Country Rehab along with a track from J P Harris & The Tough Choices who we number one on the FAR charts this month. And I finished up with Chelle Rose's new Cd "Ghost Of Browder Holler" which was produced by Ray Wylie Hubbard and one from Hubbard's latest "The Grifter's Hymnal".

I had a great time this afternoon talking with Seadar Rose and Aaron Davis from Screen Door Porch. They are out touring behind their second release "The Fate & The Fruit". Originally started as duo of Rose and Davis they are now a 4 piece band with Tom Davidson on bass and Andy Peterson on drums.
From slow melody driven ballads featuring Rose's sultry southern vocals to funky banjo driven rockers, Screen Door Porch delivers a wonderful blend of roots rock which we like to call "Our Kind Of Music".

I am saddened this week by the passing of another great musician that I have loved and respected most of my life, Mr. Levon Helm.
I was first introduced to Helm and "The Band" by my High School teacher, Steve Sigur who used Helm as an example of what a good drummer is like in his music classes. Since High School and the break up "The Band" in '76 I didn't listen to much of Helm's solo efforts in the '80s but took a listen again in the '90s when Helm and former "Band" mates Rick Danko and Garth Hudson regrouped and put out three more albums under the name "The Band". The album "Jerico" is one of my favorite from this time period.
Since his recovery from throat cancer, Helm came back with some of his best work ever when he created his "Midnight Ramble" performances at his home studio in Woodstock. His last three CDs have all been Grammy winners including his most recent "Ramble At The Ryman". Helm leaves us at the top of his career and he will be dearly missed. Thanks for all of the good tunes. Rest well, Levon.

I was totally impressed with James Low(from Portland) last weekend at Sam Bond's Garage. For a debut album "Whiskey Farmer" has everything I want from great lyrics to beautiful melodies. The James Low Western Front is a basic 4 piece band James Low: Acoustic Guitar, Dave Camp: Electric guitar, Tim Higgins: Bass and Joe Mengis: drums, but on the CD he has additional musicians including Rob Burger: Pump Organ, Ralph Huntley: Piano Lewi Longmire: Pump Organ and Hammond Organ, Paul Brainard: Pedal Steel, Dobro and Mike Coykendall:Percussion which add a lot to fill out the tunes.
Several birthdays to celebrate on the show this week including Merle Haggard, Emmylou Harris, Eilen Jewel, and Richard Thompson.

I was sad to hear that Earl Scruggs had passed away this week,so I started and end the show with Earl playing with Doc Watson and Ricky Scaggs from a 2003 Rounder Records release called The Three Pickers. This was an excellent album recorded live late in Earl's career. I first listened to Earl Scruggs when my high school teacher, Steve Sigur turned me onto Sgruggs and Flatt back in the '70s. Steve owned a Scruggs style banjo complete with the Scruggs tuners that let you change the tuning of the strings while in mid song. He taught me to flat pick my guitar and we played several Flatt and Scruggs tunes together.
On the new music front, I had the pleasure of listening to new CD's from The James Low Western Front and Audrey Auld. While the James Low CD "Whiskey Farmer" is their first, Auld's CD "Resurrection Moon" is sort of a best hits disc with two new songs. Although Auld has several recordings, this is my first time listening to her music and I like it a lot.
