This week I had the pleasure of having Chuckanut Drive into the studio for a live performance. They are an Alt. Country band now mostly from the Seattle area except for founding member and song writer for the band, Steve Leslie who still lives on Bellingham which has a road in the area that the band takes their name from. They played a live version of "Kick In Your Door" from their recent album Fidelity Grange and a tune called "Doctor". I compared their song "Becky and Bobby" as a cross between Robert Earl Keen and Wilco. Steve said he liked that comparison and that he is also influence by artists like Dylan and John Prine among others.
Saturday evening was also very special for me with James McMurtry playing in town. He played a great show of many of his classic songs from his recent album "Just Us Kids" to his original album "Too Long In The Waste Land". His band mates the Heartless Bastards with Daren on drums and Ronnie on bass were along for the show, while Tim Holt the other guitarist for the band was on another tour doing sound for The Flatlanders. Without Tim in the mix James says he has to do more with his own guitar playing, which I must say, was very good last night.

Routes and Branches Play List 04/18/09
This week's feature artist was James McMurtry. McMurtry and his band the Heartless Bastards will be coming to Eugene next week as part of a short N.W. Tour that includes Seattle and Portland.
I had the opportunity to talk with James McMurtry on the phone this week. We talked about his album "Just Us Kids", his recent tour of Europe and a childhood story of Ken Kesey teaching him his first word, "Ball" which I mixed in with his music throughout the show.
Even though I could have filled my entire show with McMurtry's music, I also had to play some some Yonder Mountain String Band and Sam Bush after seeing them play together at the McDonald Theater Friday night. I have never seen Sam Bush play so much fiddle but in the mix it was right on. Also really hot were the duelling mandolin leads between Sam and Jeff Austin of Yonder Mountain. A great night of live music.
I also wanted to feature some of the other artists that are playing in Eugene this next week like Star Anna, Chuchanut Drive, Sideroads and Jake Payne & Dixie Creek. Check your local listings for show venues and times.
Tune in to Routes and Branches next week for an in-studio performance by Chuckanut Drive.

Routes and Branches Play List 04/11/09
In Honor of Merle Hagard turning 72 this past week, I made him the feature artist on this week's show. Merle Hagard was one of the first country style artists that I started listening to as a teenager. I always liked him for his songs like "Mama Tried" and "Workin' Man Blues", to his Honky Tonk songs and of course "Okie From Muskogee".
Speaking of old timers, JJ Cale put on a great show last weekend to a sold out crowd at the WOW Hall. With a show made up of mostly classics with a couple of tunes from his new CD "Roll On" mixed in, JJ showed us he still could rock.
New music keeps rollin' in these days. A couple of local mentions are; The Whopner County Country Allstars new CD "It's To Loud" and "Destinations" the new CD by the local Americana band Sideroads. Editors Note: I said that Sideroads would be at the Saturday Market next week (4/18), that is incorrect. The correct date is Saturday 4/25 at 2:00pm.

Routes and Branches Play List 04/04/09
With JJ Cale playing in town this Sunday at a sold out show at the WOW hall to benefit the Greenhill Humane Society, I decide to make him the feature artist of today’s show.
JJ Cale is one of my favorite song writers, he has been covered by the likes of Lynyrd Skynyrd, Widespread Panic, Yonder Mountain String Band, Chris Smither , and of course Eric Clapton along with many others. At 70 years old, Cale's new album "Roll On" is one of his best ever.
I also threw in a few brand new songs this week. Slaid Cleeves has a great new disc out and a new band from Cincinnati called One Horse sent me their debut album. I also had the new disc from local artists The Whopner County Country Allstars. I want to thank the Allstars for including me in their thank yous on the liner notes. I'm sure to bring more tracks from all of these artists to the air on upcoming shows.
Finally, I want to say a big Thank You to all of my listeners who have pledged to our Spring fundraiser. It is listeners like you who help to keep KRVM and Routes and Branches on the air.
