Routes and Branches Play List 9/27/08

This is going to be a great week for music for me. On Tuesday Robert Plant and Alison Krauss perform in Portland and my sweetie bought us tickets. The other show that I'm excited about is the Tift Merritt show here in Eugene on Wednesday night. I opened and closed Routes and Branches with all of these artists this week. Otherwise, it was another great mix of music with a lot of new music mixed in. If you like my show and read this blog, please let me know what you think.

Routes and Branches Play List 9/20/08

This week's show featured a conversation with Will Sheff of Okkervil River. Will and his band were in Eugene last night for a show at the McDonald Theater. Will brings a renewed approach to the creation of folk music. With his new album "The Stand Ins", Will passed out acoustic versions of the songs to other musicians for them to do covers of the tunes in their own way, as a means of promoting the new record. He says that this is more like how folk music was created and passed around from one musician to another. I asked Will if hearing someone else do one of his songs differently ever cause him to change how he preformed the song himself. He said that most of the time that he continues to his songs his own way, but that he recently was playing a song and found himself wanting to do it like one of his friends did it. "It keeps the music alive."

This week's show started out with an in studio conversation and music with local artist Phoebe Blume. Phoebe brings a wide mix of musical experiences to her music from Opera training to touring the clubs in a band. She uses a variety of music sampling to create unique and original music. With lyrics that reflect her rural upbringing Phoebe's songs have the feel of modern folk songs. Phoebe is currently working on a new CD due out early next year. Routes and Branches Play List 9/06/08

Tim Little

I picked up Drew Emmitt's new CD "Long Road" this week and found a lot of great tunes on it. From originals to cover tunes Drew has put together an excellent album. His covers of Super Tramp's "Take The Long Way Home", Marshall Tucker's "Take The Highway" and Van Morrison's "Gypsy in My Soul" are very well done respectable versions of the originals. He also has several excellent original tunes including "I'm Alive" and "River's Risin'
Other new music to Routes and Branches this week included the new disc from Little Feat "Join The Band" and Rodney Crowell's "Sex and Gasoline". Little Feat have joined up with a bunch of their friends and recorded new versions of all the old favorites. Rodney Crowell's new disc is loaded with great new original tunes from the title track "Sex & Gasoline" to "The Rise and Fall of Intelligent Design".
