A number of new albums this week.
Drew Emmitt (Leftover Salmon & Drew Emmitt Band) teamed up with Bill Nershi (String Cheese Incident) to put together a new band which includes Andy Thorn on Banjo and Tyler Grant on Bass. Emmitt and Nershi had crossed paths several times over the years with their former bands and always wanted to play together but never found the time until this year. Their new CD " New Country Blues" is full great new songs.
Pert' Near Sandstone is high octane string band from Minneapolis and St. Paul. Their new album "Needle And Thread" is a mix of original and Traditional tunes trying to revitalize the American stringband tradition. Pert' Near Sandstone will be in Eugene at Sam Bond's Garage on Friday, Oct. 9th.
Chris Smither has a great way of telling stories with his songs and his new CD "Time Stands Still" is just as good as ever.
Other new discs this week include: "Before The Frost" by the Black Crows, "Walk" by Red Rooster, "Be Set Free" by Langhorn Slim and a self titled CD by Todd Adelman & The Love Handles. I really like the Todd Adelman album a lot. They have a great Honky Tonk sound.

Routes and Branches Play List 09/19/09
This week's big Americana news comes out of Nashville where the Americana Association had their annual Awards Show now in it's tenth year.
Buddy Miller picked up 4 awards including: Artist Of The Year; Duo/Group Of The Year and Album Of The Year for "Written In Chalk" with his wife Julie; and Song Of The Year for the Song "Chalk" written by Julie Miller and performed by Buddy Miller and Patty Griffin. Congratulations to Buddy and Julie for all of their success. You can be sure that "Written In Chalk" is in my top 5 favorites of the year.
The award for New & Emerging Artist Of The Year went to Justin Townes Earle, while Gurf Morlix picked up the Instrumentalist Of The Year Award. There were also several Lifetime Achievement awards of which I featured the artists in this show; Asleep At The Wheel for performance; John Fogerty for Songwriter; and Sam Bush for Instrumentalist.
It was rough for me to hear that Mary Travers of Peter Paul & Mary passed away. Since I was programing our Acoustic Junction show this week I took the opportunity to feature a set of Peter Paul and Mary's music. They were very influential to my learning how to play the guitar when I was in High school. I learned each of the songs I played in the set and "Puff" is still one of my kid's favorites.

Routes and Branches Play List 09/12/09
I saw Poor Man's Whiskey this past week on the opening night of their "Dark Side Of The Moonshine" tour. I was totally blown away by their musicianship. I last saw them about a year and a half ago and I thought they were a good bluegrass band then, but this week I saw a much more mature and seasoned band that I couldn't tell wheather they wanted to be a Bluegrass band or a Rock 'N' Roll band.
Poor Man's Whiskey's new CD is a double disk of which the first one is their version of Pink Floyd's "Dark Side Of The Moon". It has a Bluegrass backbone, but it gets as electric as the original when appropriate. For the most part they stick with the original lyrics, except for the tune "Money" which they change the lyrics to Moonshine. Pink Floyd Fans and Bluegrass fans can both enjoy this album.
The second disc is called "Moonshine" and contains 10 new songs which also show how the band has grown. I featured several songs from the disc on this week's show. My show follows a show that features 60's and 70's music so we set it up to play Pink Floyd's "Money" fron the original album to end that show into Poor Man's Whiskey's "Brain Damage" and "Eclipse" to start my show. It was a fun transition.

Routes and Branches Play List 9/05/09
I started today's show with Sonny Landreth who performed last night at our Eugene Celebration. His amazing slide guitar work is as great to watch as it is to listen to.
Other than that today's theme in honor of the Labor Day weekend was mostly focused on the working man songs that are common in Americana music. I'm sure that this theme will become a regular for me and I hope to add to my collection of songs each year. This year's list includes several new songs like Sam Baker's "Cotton", Nanci Griffiths' "Cotton's All We Got" and Levon Helm's "Growin' Trade".
I finished the show with a couple of acts that I will be hosting on Sunday's Live broadcast of the Broadway Stage of the Eugene Celebration, Hillstomp and Hot Buttered Rum. See You at The Celebration!!
