I had a great time this afternoon talking with Seadar Rose and Aaron Davis from Screen Door Porch. They are out touring behind their second release "The Fate & The Fruit". Originally started as duo of Rose and Davis they are now a 4 piece band with Tom Davidson on bass and Andy Peterson on drums.
From slow melody driven ballads featuring Rose's sultry southern vocals to funky banjo driven rockers, Screen Door Porch delivers a wonderful blend of roots rock which we like to call "Our Kind Of Music".

Routes & Branches 4/21/12

I am saddened this week by the passing of another great musician that I have loved and respected most of my life, Mr. Levon Helm.
I was first introduced to Helm and "The Band" by my High School teacher, Steve Sigur who used Helm as an example of what a good drummer is like in his music classes. Since High School and the break up "The Band" in '76 I didn't listen to much of Helm's solo efforts in the '80s but took a listen again in the '90s when Helm and former "Band" mates Rick Danko and Garth Hudson regrouped and put out three more albums under the name "The Band". The album "Jerico" is one of my favorite from this time period.
Since his recovery from throat cancer, Helm came back with some of his best work ever when he created his "Midnight Ramble" performances at his home studio in Woodstock. His last three CDs have all been Grammy winners including his most recent "Ramble At The Ryman". Helm leaves us at the top of his career and he will be dearly missed. Thanks for all of the good tunes. Rest well, Levon.

Several new releases in this week's list. A couple of favorites in the first hour from New Riders Of The Purple Sage and Ray Wylie Hubbard. I've only listened to each disc a couple of times through, but I can tell that they both have a lot of good tunes on them, even if I can't play some of the best tunes on public radio.
In the second hour I played several new discs from old and new women songwriters including national artists like Bonnie Raitt, Nanci Griffith and Melody Walker, as well as local artist Tara Stonecipher who has a new EP called "Recovery" wich I like several of the tracks.

Routes and Branches Play List 04/7/12

I was totally impressed with James Low(from Portland) last weekend at Sam Bond's Garage. For a debut album "Whiskey Farmer" has everything I want from great lyrics to beautiful melodies. The James Low Western Front is a basic 4 piece band James Low: Acoustic Guitar, Dave Camp: Electric guitar, Tim Higgins: Bass and Joe Mengis: drums, but on the CD he has additional musicians including Rob Burger: Pump Organ, Ralph Huntley: Piano Lewi Longmire: Pump Organ and Hammond Organ, Paul Brainard: Pedal Steel, Dobro and Mike Coykendall:Percussion which add a lot to fill out the tunes.

Several birthdays to celebrate on the show this week including Merle Haggard, Emmylou Harris, Eilen Jewel, and Richard Thompson.
